I will be going on a trip and taking lots of pictures. I will not be taking a laptop computer? Is there some kind of device that I could download my flashcards to, at the end of the day, so I don't have to take many flash cards? Thanks

I think WalMart will burn you a CD from a CF ( or other ) memory card. I think this is usually an option when you order prints, but they'll probably just burn a CD if you're nice.

If you're travelling in the US, and in the Lower 48, you're never all that far from a WalMart, sadly.

Not a direct answer to your question, but I went to Hawaii last month. It seemed at every street corner there was a sign saying "download your photos here". I used a place near my hotel to download and burn to CD. I guess it also depends where you are going.

iPod (not mini) with the Belkin media reader (it's a bit slow but works) or any of the many portable hard drive solutions. The iPod's not bad for carrying your music/contacts/calendar/few games around with you at the same time.

I just posted this in another thread, but will the iPod support the Canon RAW/THM files for transfer, or just JPGs?

There are many devices which you can use for storing data from CF - FlashTrax, ImageTank, X's-Drive, SuperDigiBin, Tripper, etc. They're basically 2,5" harddrives with battery and CF reader (some also read other cards). There are also portable CD burners.

See the 'Storage and Media' forum for more information. Also, the link below has basic comparison of few types:

It would be interesting to see a CD burner with a CF slot that can handle data WITHOUT requiring a computer. Better than a hard disk device, you'd be able to make redundant backups -- e.g., on a trip, keep a set of CDs in your luggage and send another home, just in case.

A HD, once dropped, is nothing but a doorstop, and your pictures are gone.

I have buyed the x-drive pro with a 30Gb hard drive.

It has an USB 2.0 interface and uses the same usb cable of the 300D.

I have buyed this device in internet to http://www.powerinnumbers.com.au .

Supports CF cards, Smart Media, Memory Stick, Secure digital and MultiMedia card.

It acts also as MP3 player.

You mean something like this?

Wow, it already exists! Thanks for the information, looks like the perfect travel mate.

Such a solution beats any other device for data security. CD-R media are cheap and available everywhere, which makes redundancy affordable.

Ultimate all in one.

MP3, video player/recorder and file storage. Plus you can display your photos on the built-in screen or watch it on a TV.

Good question, and I think that it does - however, check out the (not favourable) reviews on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000TNJU4/103-8152637-8659852?v=glance

It sounds that even if it does transfer RAW files, there's certainly some battery drain considerations in transferring gigs of RAW files.

I'm really hoping that that some other 3rd party company such as Griffin produce a much quicker media card reader for the iPod - there certainly don't seem to be many favourable reviews of Belkin's device.

The iPod from Apple is another solution. With an additional CF-reader hooked up to the iPod you can transfer all your photos.
It's not cheap but it's great usage.
The new iPod is windows compatible and available in different capacity.

I use the Archos Gmini 120 - 20 gb mini hard drive, built-in CF reader, USB2 to PC interface, plays mp3's. Works great, especially when you're shooting large Raw format files and need to empty your CF cards. If you travel outside the America's ,the power supply/charger accepts 120 or 220 voltages, 50 or 60 cycles - a must.
