Hi,

Now that the D70 has been around so long as to be old news I wondered what people think about the D50, and what firmware updates they would like to see before it gets to us?

Speaking personally I am already losing sleep with excitement at the thought of a sub £500 but there are issues that have already been raised elsewhere that I think we must all be worried about already.

Nikon's choice of materials has come under some scrutiny recently, and at no time more so than when they announced that they were going to make the lens mount on the D50 out of cheese.

Consternation all round, sniggers from the Canon camp, you'd have thought they'd had said it would be cream cheese. In my opinion a nice mature parmesan should be able to support a 70-210VR and thats all that counts in my book.

The next issue to really be worrying the lucky early users of the camera is its performance for portraits. It would appear that the camera can give every single model a really funny expression on their face. Whilst this may be a problem with the kit lens, even if it isn't it is surely something that can be fixed in firmware can't it?

So could you please comment or give any opinions you have, all would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance

RB

BTW If you have never heard of teh Nikon D50 or not seen anything written about it then make something up, I did.

Has anything concrete been heard about the "D50", or is it a hopeful myth?

72 fps, 36 megapixels, full frame at a very affordable price ($160).
..it also comes with 680 gigabyte of internal storage. Should keep you happy for a week or two.

I recently tested a Nikon D42 1/2 (an early prototype of the upcoming D40) and I'm really excited!

72 fps, 36 megapixels, full frame at a very affordable price ($160).

I can hardly wait!

will it have the 200-400 VR as a kit lens?

Or the improved 300-600 VR version that folds up nicely into the battery compartment?

will it have the 200-400 VR as a kit lens?
This has not yet been decided, but rumours say it will include a new DX AFS 12-400mm f/1.8 (about the same size as the current 17-35mm).

The camera body will also include a new cutting-edge battery with minimum 5 years capacity (shooting 3000+ NEF's a day and moderate LCD use).

and don;t forget the voice activated shutter release.

The voice-activated shutter is an option, but the more exciting news is the fully automatic operation of the camera. You turn it on, and the camera floats in the air and takes pictures according to the preset. There are 2 custom presets that can be changed by the user using Nikon Capture Control, ver 7567.275. The included presets are Sports, Landscape, Portrait, and Award-Winning Quality.

Unless you want T3 here arguing for the next level 300DMKII with a genuine camembert mount! We don't want a massive exodus here...

You must mean the DX AFS 12-400mm f/1.8 VR, from which the VR will also have a 'hyperactive' mode, which is automatically initiated the moment te helicopter rotorblades fold out and the camera floats about taking the pictures you had in mind.

I dont believe you, it isnt possible
that there is any battery with so large
capacity, or is there a mini nuke in this
Camera.

Don' fool us. But I am curious now what is the price
of this. I mean estimated price.

If it is true I will wait a little more, and buy me some
what like that.

The D50 is just smoke and mirrors, to distract us from Nikon's actual next camera. The D8, nicknamed "Cat."

With technology from its earlier namesake, it will have a fixed focal length kit lens, but will have the capability of carving a road to get you to whatever distance you need for proper framing.

I ain't gonna buy the D50, I just heard that it is silver colored and not black!

I just got off the phone with a Nikon spokesperson and he said the
D40 and D50 have been discontinued because of advancing technology
and is being replaced by the D20. It comes pre-packaged with choice
of 3 lenses all for $199 + s&h.
