Hi,

finally I decided to buy the 14n and found a very good offer on ebay. It did not mention in the description if it was already a 512 MB buffer version (btw, its brand new)or not. I sent the seller an email (before bidding), asking about this fact and was asured by him, that it will be the 512 mb version.

The camera will arrive in the next days and I want to know if there is a possibility to check the MB version immidiately without turning the camera on, so I can check this fact before paying the UPS-guy ( If it is not the 512 Version it would be a loss of about 500 bucks - I would send it back)

Best regards,
andrea

You'd have to turn the camera on.

eBay is based upon feedback, so assuming the seller already has a good reputation selling camera equipment and he has assured you it's 512, I'm confident you'll be OK. If it's not 512MB, contact the seller and see what they can do before you enter a negative feedback.

eBay also offers escrow for a fee in case you're very fearful that a product may not be what the seller says it is. I haven't used escrow myself, so I'm not sure how it works.

Externally there is no difference in the 256 vs. 512 version. But if you turn on the camera in the little front dispaly below the tft screen 512 will show up next to the 14 n logo.

Hi Andrea,

I'm trying to get a 14n on ebay. Found what 'seems to be' a good deal, but I don't trust this guy much, honestly. He's offering me a brand new DCS 14n 512 Mb model for $2500, or a demo unit, also the 512 Mb model, with less than 500 shutter actuations, for $2200, shipping and insurance included. He said the demo model is in immaculate condition, just like new.

What really worries me is the fact that he lives in the UK, and does not accept Credit cards and does not have any feeback. He's making arrangements with ebay to conduct this transaction in a way that I feel confidentent about getting what I pay for. So, I don't know what to do.
I haven't paid yet, just considering the possiblity to go through with the deal.

Can you tell me where you bought your camera? Maybe I can buy one from that seller, if for some reason my deal with the British guy fails.
Thanks in advance.

Pete,

It sounds as though your are skeptical of this deal. My advice would be to hold that position. No feedback, foreign country, will probably ask for payment through Western Union with a password that only you know, making arrangement with eBay (?) - all of this should make the alarm bell ring loudly in your head. eBay is a sellers market. There is no reason for a legitimate seller to "low-ball" an auction. For another $400 or so you can order from a legitimate seller like B&H, or someone else on eBay with a better track record and payment terms, and have more assurance that you will actually get a camera. My opinion only.

Good Luck,
Dave

Thanks Dave,
That's exactly what I thought! It sounds too good to be true!

I've been thinking that it would be much easier for this person to sell his cameras in England -I'm sure that for the price his is asking for the cameras, they would sell like cookies- instead of selling them here in the USA.

He does have a web site, and he mentions his auction on e-bay there. But, I think this is all a scam, to be honest. On his website he clearly states that he accepts credit cards, but after I contacted him, he said that he could not accept them because he lives in the UK.
Well, the following is the email he sent me:

" Hello Pete,

They are in like new condition, absolutely.

The unit with fewest actuations I have has only 471 photos taken.

The best I can do is $2200 3 day shipping included with insurance.

However I do not accept credit cards directly.

I was thinking of PayPal.com as the payment method. I have contacted
them to make sure we can use them and they said businesses located in
multiple countries, i.e. USA and United Kingdom, like I am, don't
qualify for their Buyer's Protection program yet. So PayPal may not be
the best option here.

Paypal advised we should use eBay insured payments for this
transaction because we don't know each other yet, so we need a safe
way to finalize our first transaction. eBay will recommend us how you
need to pay me so you can be insured for the entire value of this
purchase, not just the regular $200 protection they offer (minus $25
processing fee). In case you don't get what you are paying for, you
get a full refund.

BEFORE WE START, LET ME KNOW YOUR FULL NAME AND SHIPPING DETAILS. (no
P.O. boxes please, I won't ship there)

I will contact eBay and they will get back to us if our transaction
was approved. If you got the purchase protection, they will notify us
and give further instructions on how to complete the transaction. This
may take some time, so please be patient.

These are the steps to follow (quoting from eBay's notifications for
previous transactions completed this way):

" Complete your eBay transaction in 5 easy steps:

Buyer and seller agree on the transaction terms and a selling price.
Seller contacts eBay with the transaction details;

eBay accepts the transaction and offers purchase protection to the
buyer (if the transaction is declined, no further action is required
from either the buyer or the seller);

The buyer sends payment and the seller receives it. After the payment
was received, the seller must notify eBay. Buyer will send the payment
details directly to the seller email address. The seller has 3
business days to send the buyer and eBay the tracking number of the
shipment. If no tracking number is provided, a full refund is
immediately sent to the buyer;

Buyer receives the merchandise and has 5 days to inspect it. If it is
complete and as described, the buyer should accept the merchandise. If
he refuses the merchandise, the buyer must ship the merchandise back
to the seller within 3 business days.

After the inspection period is over, the buyer must contact eBay with
the result of the inspection. If the buyer refuses the merchandise,
the refund will be sent to the buyer after the tracking number for the
returned shipment is verified. "

I think you should stay in the US market, because the camera is offered cheaper there.

For me, who is from Europe, it is more difficult (most of the cheap prices are with rebate - not consumable without an US-account, high shipping costs, especially if you have to return the camera, etc)

For safety: though my seller has 100 % positive feedback I decided to use collect on delivery service so I can be sure to get what i am paying for.

Best regards
Andrea

This all sounds very dicey. No feedback, selling for a price that might just
be too good, and demanding direct funds transfer to a foreign location.
Though Spain or Rumania would probably be even more suspicious than
the U.K.

Hmm. Their Internet domain is registered through someone in Australia, which
seems a bit odd. Their "catalog" seems to consist mainly of oldies like the
Canon D30, PowerShot G1, and PowerShot Pro 90 IS, which have all been out
of production for years. And all their prices are quoted in U.S. dollars, though
their address is in London. British Telecom
()
shows no listing for Welsanma in London. The only thing starting with
"Wels" is a dentist named "Welsh." The contact listed on their site, Fabio
Turchi, doesn't have a London number either. The only "Dover House" I
found in London is a Government building, the home of the Scotland Office.
MapQuest can find SE5 9RE, so that may be genuine, if not in an upmarket
location. This definitely is not a blue-chip company.

Thank you all for taking the time to investigate this guy. I've already decided no to go on with the deal. This smelled scam from the very beginning, and I'm sure it is a scam. I won't take the bait!!!

I've already found a camera on eBay, from a seller with execelent feedbak, who accepts credit cards and other forms of payment. I think It'is a good deal. $2800 for a camera in like new condition, according to him, plus two Sigma lenses: The 17-35 EX HSM and a 28-300.
I forgot to ask him how many shutter actuations are on the camera now.
What do you think, is this a good deal? The camera is the 256 Mb model.
Thanks again for your help and advice.

There has been (an continues to be) widespread fraud on eBay for high-end digital cameras such as the 14n, SLR/n, and Canon 1DS models. If the seller's feedback does not fully agree with the ad for the camera, it's a likely fraud. I've turned in literally hundreds of these ads to eBay Customer Service, and in each case they've been pulled within a few hours.

When looking at an ad for an expensive electronic item, I always scroll down first to see if the seller accepts credit card or PayPal payment (frauds seldom want to involve credit cards). If the seller only accepts money orders or Western Union payment, it's a red flag. If the seller is in a foreign country, it's also a warning. Also be very afraid of any auctions that in any way hide the bidding activity or require "pre-approved" bidders. Since these fraud artists are generally using hijacked user names & feedback, it's a simple matter to examine the buyer/seller feedback for the seller. In many cases you will see a major disagreement between the type of item sold and the history of sales. You would not expect someone who has a history of only purchases of inexpensive collectibles to suddenly offer up several ads for high-end digital cameras, laptops and plasma TVs--but this is often the case.

It is unfortunate that eBay seems to have to depend on individuals to do the work of finding these frauds, and it seems to me that if these are easy to spot that they could be more proactive in eliminating them in the first place.

Report all cases of suspected fraud to eBay Customer Service immediately:
