Why give pbase money?

When you can get your own domain name and hosting, have your own website and email accounts and custom (free) gallery software for very little more or potentially even LESS than pbase!

I don't think you get very good value at all from pbase, but then I have my own physical servers in a data centre so I am biased in my opinion.

Bottom line is one way or another you will pay for it, why do people always seem to think everything Internet related should be free?

I was producing my own galleries on free web space. I just recently gave pbase some bucks and switched my galleries over.

Why?

1) They are easy to use and do what I want for now.
2) 23$ isn't going to bankrupt me and is worth the time savings (see point a)

3) Make my photos more widely available. The way they link photos from the front, favorite galleries, etc. all give me potentially more exposure. Furthermore, it is working. My pages are getting hits at a nice rate.

I was using Jalbum. I have looked into other software as well. I'm a software engineer and could make my own. But personally, I would rather spend my free time using my camera instead of developing a custom website.

Addam,

Give us the link to your gallery.

Personally I love pbase. I too have been with them from the start, when it was a free site and donations were voluntary. I donated to them at that time and have not had an overwhelming reason to leave. Since becoming a "pay" site, their service has gotten even better.

That said, if we see more and more of our peers developing slick and functional web galleries, we will be seduced to look further into doing this ourselves. Also having a knowledgable group to assist with questions, etc might help those who might be ready to test the water. Personally I've seen very few privately owned and run web galleries that were superior to what I see at pbase. Mostly I see just the opposite.

So lead the way, Adam. You may have a huge following, me included.

Cheers,

jim

How are you going to do all that stuff you mention for

Plus unlimited bandwidth. I've had full size "Straight from the camera" 4MB JPEG example images that had more than 1000 hits in a month.

Pbase serves a very good purpose. I put images for forums and friends up there. I don't want lots of hits to my website for forum type pictures.

1. $23 is really nothing for the space Im buying, especially when the $23 is a yearly rate.

2. Its so easy that even without any knowledge of anything even my mother could post her pics in minutes.

3. Some of us have to work and the ability to upload fast without having to worry about anything is a plus.
4. Exposure in a community of people who share our interests.

I could go on a long time, maybe eventually, if things get serious in my photography I would consider other options, but for now (and a long time, I guess) pbase will rule my photo world.

The script that generates your gallery works extremely well, and it makes a convenient way to post images to share. I also maintain images on my own server, but that's largely commercial traffic which sometimes suffers from performance slowdowns at peak times - don't want to add more traffic. The best part is....it's ad free! For $23 I couldn't be happier.

This was meant to be in response to an entry in another thread, I must have accidentally hit 'new message' I didn't mean to make this a new thread. Now I feel like a troll :)

And that's entry level plan for hosting company with good ratings such as Lonex. Not counting domain. Sure $23 for PBase beats this in money and hassle sense.

Than fuss around writing web pages and most of us don't have our own data centers.

Its called bandwidth. I host sites and let me tell you I wont put my own photos on one. Why? Because the first time I put pictures up there were several hundred hits in the first half hour. Do you know what kind of bandwidth this requires when that many people are looking at photos? Not pretty.

pBase has unlimited bandwidth. Save yourself from getting thrown off of your own domain and get some space at pBase. Trust me :)

Anyone know how much it cost for your own domain name in Canada?

hehe.. I've seen your posts before Addam and you're definately not a troll although this post does have that kind of flavour, doesn't it?

I'm a Pbaser as well, with them from before they became fee based. Heck, I wish they'd charge just a bit more and give us even more features. $2 a month? I'm not that hard up! :)

Show us the link to your site when it's ready. I always like looking at the layout and design of independent sites.

I paid $50 us for it, but I think I got ripped off. You may have to shop around. Also, getting top level domains can be tricky as there used to be lots of restrictions.

It seemed easier the last time I did it (several months ago).

Jim

One of my galleries is at http://www.inviplex.com/ex/

The thing I like about this gallery is I can upload a batch of photo's either in folders or just into an existing folder, click reindex in the admin page and then easily add comments, the file structure you see is built from the actual file system stored on the hard drive. The colour and style are also pretty easy to change and it can also handle videos if you want it to.

Also you can add password protection to different folders / galleries and customize the EXIF data that is displayed.

Some people don't like the structure of it but there are PLENTY of free scripts out there, it's just a matter of finding one you like best.

Adam
Addam,

No problem at all. Had the same happen to me.

But I really would like to see your website (see request above).
Share your link with us.

Cheers,

jim

I'm not sure how much a .ca is but you can get a .com/net/org for 8$US at http://www.godaddy.com . I've used them for years and have had no problems.

Now you don't get a DNS server with them so you'll have to get one on your own. I've been using zoneedit.com, it's free for up to 5 domains. I've been with them for about 3 years and have had no problems. IIRC there are a few other free ones out there but I don't know their names off the top of my head.
