Get 300D now or wait??

D300 is good. D70 isn't available. It depends if you are willing to wait. I got hte DRebel and could care less what Nikon releases since I am very content with my new cam which beats every single digicam I have ever owned.
I don't own any Dslr as of yet.. The D70 is nice.. But no sample
pictures yet.. and I seen what Canon's CMOS has to offer, Which is
good.

IMHO,

I haven't got a DSLR yet, I have been saving up for a 300D. Now that I can afford it, the D70 comes out ! Argh !!!! Forunately, I don't have any lenses yet, so I might go for the D70. I spent too many late hours working to be able to buy a DSLR. I will want the best package I can buy, given my budget. I really hope Canon can come up with something to fight off the D70, but since I prefer sports photography, the D70 seems more attractive to me, with the better buffer and AI Focusing.

Other than that, the 300D will be almost as good, meybe better in some things, and I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of them.

Good luck deciding, I wish I could help you more, but I'm on the same boat :-(

The cyle will never end. As soon as the D70 is released, Canon or another company will announce something better with availability around the corner. I agree either camera would be a good choice. My last digicam was a Fuji S602 and the difference in image quality with the D300 is like night and day so I am a happy camper. I did use the movie mode on the Fuji (which was pretty good 640x480 @ 30fps) but my wife just got a new Sony DVD cam so the Fuji is now been sent to ebay land.

Unless you are diire need of a camera now, Id wait a couple or three weeks. There is no doubt that the 300D is a great camera (I'm really pleased with mine), but Canon have several announcements due soon and the Nikon D70 reviews may be out by then. I personally don't think that the D70's sensor will be up to that of the Canon 300D, but you never know.

When it gets down to it, the sensor is what matters. It is picture quality not features make the difference.

I like taking alot of Show shutter shots.. at time I checked the Sony had a few Hot Pixels..

I'm impressed with the Canon.. Phil posted a review on the D60, He did a 4 Minute Exp. and Not one hot Pixel!

...it's a processing issue. Above some shutter speed cameras turn on a hot pixel filter or the like. So it's not really a sensor issue per se.

Also, it's not yet 100% clear if the Sensor is the same as that in the D100 and *istD. Some say it's a new generation Sony and some other say it's from a different supplier. I haven't heard Nikon say specifically who made it. There is an accompanying image processing chip that is all new. That's where any hot pixel handling will take place.

Hot pixels are also very temperature related. If you run into a problem, just cool off the camera in a fridge and you'll see them hugely reduced or eliminated. Minimize image display use too as the backlight adds heat.

...at least until April when the D70 is released. Theres simply no reason for Canon to cut price at the moment. 300Ds are selling like hotcakes and the D70 is two months away. I too was thinking about waiting (but just for PMA; not the D70) but last month I went out and bought my 300D. I too had trouble finding one in stock. I'm very happy and don't regret my decision. Since then I've taken over 1000 photos.

Do you mind waiting two months to see if the D70 lives up to your expectations or to save $100 on the 300D? Not worth it imho.

I have to agree with you... I mean I did alot of buying.. I got a brand new Canon i960 printer & a Canon Lide 30 Scanner... I just need the camera next..I been into Circuit City already and took pictures on my CF card.. Every store I go into and I see a 300D, I will pick it up and hold it.. I been doing that about every weekend since November.

Another reason to wait is that the D70 might cause Canon to lower the price of the 300D (or maybe the 10D instead?). Unless you have a big event coming up within the next 2-3 weeks it definitely won't hurt to wait.

I say wait a week and see what happens at the show. Then if nothing new is announced, I would go ahead. I bought a 300D in November and a couple of weeks ago, exchanged it for a new one which came in Friday. I could have received a full refund and bought another camera but I like the 300D and this one seems to be sharper than my last 300D....here is a post I made tonight with some pictures I took tonight.

How many pictures will you miss if you wait another couple of months? That is what you should be asking yourself?

My metric for size of CF card is that it should be able to take 1 days worth of photos when I am travelling. So far, that looks to be around 100-150 photos. Your choice as to your preferred resolution and compression, and format. This will determine how big the CF card is that you need.

I am finding 256MB gives me approx 70 JPEG (large, fine compression). About 20-30 RAW. I'd expect to shoot mostly JPEG, only a couple of RAW for special shots (again, this is up to you!). For me, I need 512MB minimum.

Beyond that, I think a digital wallet is a great thing, if you do not travel with a laptop. Size the disk in the wallet based on expected "time away from base". For 7 days away from base, I need a minimum of 7x512MB=3.5GB.

Your own needs may be very different to mine- you might want to size your CF card for 2 days photos.

A neat alternative is an Apple iPOD and the Belkin Media Adapter that slurps your photos into the iPOD. And you get a great MP3 player! I've been looking for a reason to buy one of these...

Cheers,

...a CD takes approximately 680MB so theres close to a 1:1 relation between CF cards and blank CDs. IMHO thats quite useful. 512MB is quite cost effective too. Possibly more so than 1GB. I wouldn't get anything smaller than a 512MB card with this sort of camera though. 6.3mp even at large/fine jpeg (vs raw) can chew up space real fast (just hold down the shutter release in continuous mode and you'll quickly see this).

I'd suggest having 2x 512MB cards at a minimum. You can swap between them then and if you get one of those image bank devices (hard disk with a CF reader) then you can use one card while the other is being dumped to disk.

From everything I've seen, the CMOS sensor delivers a better color reproduction. It also does a better job with reflections off of metalic surfaces, specifically aircraft. I also hear that it prints up much better than CCD images. Plus, Canon produces it's own sensors in-house, while the D70 will have the same Sony sensor as the D100.
