I am wondering where is a good place to get on the list for a 1D Mark II? I am looking for a store that will likely get a decent supply to meet demand, and be competitive with the prices of the time. Any advice about stores you have used and had good experiences with would be great.

B&H Photo, or Adorama, or 17th Street Photo... are possible
suggestions. These are the big, reliable, shops in New York City,
and they ship, et cetera.

But there are probably 10 or 20, or 30, other possible places in the U.S.

Kenmar in NY, I usually get everything I can there, great people, great service, and they seem to get a good deal of cameras from Canon early on. By now they more than likely have a wait but its worth getting on the list there. I deal with Mkie, Jeff, and Ken, tell them Stephen Eastwood sent you so you want a good deal. I agree about B&H. When the 10D was released B&H seemed to get a bunch and everyone on the waiting list seemed to get theirs pretty much on the first day. However, they might not get the same number of 1DIIs.

Local camera shops have had a rough time of it lately. A lot of their film business has been lost, and the sales of equipment have suffered because of the large volume disounts of internet retailers.

But...
These folks can still place orders with Canon that will carry more weight than individual buyers. Their orders might be filled before all others will.
If the buyer winds up with a lemon - it happens from time to time - the dealer can provide more leverage for immediate replacement than mail order customers might have.
There won't be any real bends in the price curve at this early stage of the game, so why not support your local dealer?

I'm glad you have a good local dealer. That's the best choice if you have a good one. I don't.

I think I read about 5 days ago ... Chuck Westfeld (?) of Canon was
saying even "Canon, USA" isn't 100% what they are going to sell
it to the stores for.

But soon we'll know. Another week or two. Maybe less.

Are there any retailer reps on this site that have in the past and would again, actually divulge their unit cost that they pay to Canon for cameras? just curious...

I live around 900 feet away from their store. However, they do do online business quite a bit. Great guys and decent prices.

Btw. Living so close to a camera shop is really hard on the wallet.

I live about 10 miles from Canoga Camera (Granada Hills) and it has cost me a fortune! I can only imagine what would happen if I could just walk down the street ;-)

I've been working with Greg Noble and the folks from Canoga for a while now and they are nothing short of the best! They treat their customers well, and their prices are very comptetitive with the other reputable dealers out there.

Have bought supplies and flash units (no camea or lenses) and the staff is generally excellent. No pressure and they really know their products. Certainly not the lowest price in town.

Canoga Camera is a top notch dealer with great prices and OUTSTANDING service. I have been dealing with them for more than 30 years and have always been more than satisfied. These people really know how to treat their customers.

Call Greg Noble at 800 201-4201.

I pre-ordered mine from OneCall.com. I've heard only good things about them. And they won't hit your credit card until they ship.
