S10 questions:

Which do you think would be better quality overall---Large 1600X1200 at fine JPEG VS Middle 1280X960 at super fine JPEG. The 1280X960 super fine produdes a larger file size (about 1mb VS 500k) but is it worth it? Would I be better off using the 1600X1200 fine---half the file size but more compression.

John

hey john.

the bottom line is whether or not you intend to make prints.

for the web, medium is fine. if you plan to make any size prints, you need every bit of resolution. i have an hp photosmart printer and 4x6 prints absolutely sparkle. 8x10 are great. i always shoot in the SF mode, as i never know when i will want to make a print for myself or somebody.

'course, i am lucky enought to have a microdrive.... so if you plan to do a lot of printing, get a micrdrive or large cf card(s) and shoot in the higher rez.

and do some experimenting, as well.

enjoy.

Thanks but you hit the nail---I only have the 8mb card and one 16mb coming in the mail. I also want to back-up some of my "keepers" to a 1.44mb floppy and the 1600X1200 super fine won't fit. So you are saying that the 500k fine 1600X1200 will print better than the 1mb 1280X960 superfine?

Is 1600X1200 superfine really that much better than the fine 1600X1200?

Thanks, John

the best advice i can give you is to make some pix with everything being the same as far as lighting, etc. your significant other, cat, backyard or whatever. the only thing being different would be the compression. make some prints, eyeball them and see what you see.

if you can't see much difference, or your printer doesn't resolve the difference, use more compression and take more pix!

let me know how the experiment goes...

Hey, I was hoping YOU would do all that for me---I'm too lazy. Kidding. I don't have a color printer yet and won't have anytime soon. I need to upgrade my old Aptiva 150mhz first!

Looks like from the other post that 1280X960 superfine beats 1600X1200 fine so I'll use that until I can verify with my own printer.
