another day in nyc (828 images)

well, as many of you know, i spent the day shooting in nyc with my
good friend and fellow stfer, harry behret. we had a ball as is
our usual.

i got in early this morning (couldn't sleep for some reason!) and
so i took a walk into brooklyn and then back over the brooklyn
bridge. i shared this shot earlier, but that was a quickie edit
while at starbucks waiting on harry :)

and here's another on the brooklyn bridge:

finally caught up with harry at starbucks, and after a triple tall
no foam latte, we wandered up towards chinatown in the pouring rain:

we then went underground, for a quick subway ride up to times
square, we heard there was some excitement going on up there ;)

here's harry shooting my picture of the day on the kodak jumbotron:

whew... harry said he was tired and hungry, so we went to virgil's
bbq for a small bite of health food. (i hope nc notices!).
virgil's is outstanding -- i had ribs & chicken, harry had pulled
pork. all of it, outta this world, good.

harry's like a sherpa - he hauls about twenty nikon lenses, every
accessory known to man, his nikon d100, a flash, and his sony
f717 :) he is prepared for anything, let me tell you!

after lunch, we shot one more of the kodak thing. by the way: on
the 828, the shutter lag is so much less than on the 717. i tried
to get this shot with my 717 for another stfer a few months ago,
and couldn't. you only have about 1 second to get the
photographer's name and the photo on the big screen together. i
tried with my 717 5 times and couldn't do it. today, with the 828,
i got the shot on my very first try:

then, we headed over to rockefeller center.. just for kicks.

st. patrick's cathedral is just across the way, why not step in out
of the rain and get some divine guidance?

i just love shooting in cathedrals:)

here's st. jude:

all in all, a great day and i thank harry for doing the town wtih
me again!

i have to say, about the sony f828: it is an incredible performer!
it's great to schlep around all day with it on my tripod, it rests
on my shoulder so nicely. it got wet, all day.. even though i had
a bag covering it... and the camera is no worse for it... i took
plenty of shots in varying situations again today, and the image
quality is outstanding. colors true, the white balance is very
accurate. oh and the prints - i made several big prints tonight
already, the quality is just great. i'll say it again, in case
anyone hasn't heard, this is a fantastic camera. an improvement,
featurewise and quality over my 717.

iso64, yes. but iso 64, and a tripod for that matter, won't stop the action of moving people, only a fast shutter speed will do this.

i wanted the movovement of the poeple... rock center is and nyc is a very busy place. people move, a lot.

the reason you see people moving is that the shutter speed was slow: here, it was 1/2 second.
Nice pics!
One question: the Rockefeller tree, was that shot at ISO64 priority?
I'm asking cause you see the movement of the people.

The umbrella shot is a definite saleable image. And Im more than a little jealous of the jumbotron mention. Sweet !

all that camera stuff? LOL.

Andy your making that 828 look SUPER to me. Great news on the shutter lag, seems so far everyone agrees on that one. :) COOL!

Andy,

Great pics but you should have left the one of me out. Its just too
much competition for the other shots.
you look like a star there! i love this shot harry ;)
Seriously thats an outstanding series of pics.
thanks harry
I remember the first
time we shot the POTD at Times Square. You had your 717 then and
you could not capture the moment when the name is flashed on the
screen because of the shutter lag. Today with the 828 you caught it
on one try.
big plus for the 828!

thanks olga ;)
Thanks for the tour and the wonderful pictures. I'm not so sure I
could do what you guys did, walk around in the rain, hauling all
that photo equipment with tripods and such.
you'd be surprised. the 828 on a sturdy tripod balances perfectly over one's shoulder. you don't even have to hold the thing with either hand ;)
Heck, I can't do that
in good weather! :-)

I looked at that subway entrance and was thinking that I had never
seen that before. That's when it dawned on me that I haven't been
on a NYC subway in 30 years...
nyc subways make for great shooting ;>
A most enjoyable series of pictures, and as always so very well done.

Thanks again,

Olga

Hi Andy,

Again... congrats on your big day!

This is a great series, and I love the pictorial style! :-) 828
sure does seem to be performing quite well for you.

That lunch looks so good I can barely stand it. I had Cheerios for
lunch.

Nice shots and I especially love the story line. Too bad you had such a foul weather day in NYC. I live in the area and I can vouch for the fact that NYC is very difficult in the rain!

You guys should continue the road show, how about down in my area, Lambertville NJ? :)

By the way, I just purchased the P10 and am having a ball with it. Capturing many impromptu shots of my kids and stuff. Thanks for the info a few days ago.

Cheryl,

I thought it was the 7th (tomorrow). I will be able to get into Manahttan on Friday (the 9th) and get some pics for you. I'm glad you posted I would have gone out tomorrow and be wondering where your pic was.
