Can anyone tell me major differences between these except for marginal price and size differences. Why will one "win" out versus other over long run for photography. I assume CF rules!
As far as it relates to digital SLR photography, I think the differences between the two formats is essentially irrelevant. Far more important is the decision regarding which camera and lens system one wishes to invest in.
I suspect we'll see CF continue in the DSLR arena simply because the larger physical size allows for higher capacity cards, dSLR's don't have the compact-camera size-wars driving the manufacturers to move to smaller cards, and there is an existing installed base.
The underlying flash memory that is built into the card is basically the same as far as I know.

The main difference between compact flash and most other memory formats is that compact flash has the memory controller built into the card. This is the reason why compact flash cards are physically larger then other formats.
The advantage is with technological advances, the controllers can be built faster. When capacities get larger, newer controllers can be built to handle the new capacity. Smartmedia died because it hit its capacity limit.
Compact flash has the unlimited capacity advantage while other formats have the size advantage important to smaller cameras.
