Yes. I saw that yesterday posted at Steve's, and followed several links deep to the tech info. Veeeeery interesting, and weird-looking.

Appears only to be a video solution for now. If developed further, it could be another tool for photography. I wonder how accurate the lens really is, since it's developed for such small sensor sizes. I would rather see a high-res. 360º x true 90º+ lens, if that's possible. Anything except those gawd-awful mirror systems, which only allow for low-quality pics. - web only output.

I don't mind the stitching, but quicker is always better. Something to watch.

If you're interested in 360 degree and panorama type shots, check
out the latest info from Sony. Seems they also outline a roadmap of
how this tech will improve. :-)

Seriously? At Steve's?? How did I miss that? I was there a few times yesterday and a few more today. I must have totally overlooked it.

Did you see the roadmap showing that they plan to have 8MP versions by 2004/Q2 ? Wow...

8MP? OK. Now that the PDF fully loaded, I see that now. Sony will have an 8MP CCD chip soon? Nah. I can't believe that. ;-)

Let's hope the lens is up to it. I wonder what this would cost, though. I haven't read anywhere yet that this would be just available only in a lens. That would be nice, but they'd need to rework it extensively for VR pano's and such. There's no mention that this is what they're going to do.

Keeping the horizon in the middle is critical for VR's. I'm obsessed with that. I use no less than 4 levels, and measure from at least 7 spots on the cam, pano bracket, lens mount, tripod head, tripod boom, etc, just to keep everything looking normal in the final output. It also helps greatly when cropping the stitched output, since less is lost from the top and the bottom of the image.

Sony's lens, in these papers, describes 70º above horizon, and (up to) only 17º below the horizon. This would force remapping to place the horizon way above the actual spot. This is unfortunate for pano freaks like me.

The remapping that they describe is a very simple matter. I use PanoTools' Remap module for that. I shoot conventionally, stitching portrait WA shots together in Panorama Factory.

One can reverse-map a regular 360º pano into what Sony descibes as this new lens' native output (see below). Sony outlines a few options for remapping into conventionally viewed images. It can go either way. The below circular was just for fun.

normal stitched output from 10 portrait 24mm shots:

remapped to circular pano in Panorama Tools' Remap:

Did these, along with a dozen other panos of my wife's childhood home that their parents just sold a week ago. I shot 3 bracked shots each view x 10, for each 360 view (several hundred MB worth). From those, I could Layer Mask outdoor shots, and stack the others to reduce the noise. Was a fun and lengthy project.
