===>>>The Rebel Contest 1 <<<<===

it is not realistic to do this without consulting people. everybody should have to say their opinion about the rules...if only a fiew agree then the contest will NOT work. what makes a contest interesting is participation.

same thing for the subject, it should be voted and the majority of the votes pick up the next subject from a lits of people suggestions.

We put up a thread where everybody can submit a subject, then we put up a thread with all the subject and then people can vote...we take the subject that has the more votes. if not then bye bye participation.

my opinion.

I also want to see a thread here where the general public forum members can vote for their vaforite. I do want to know what most people would have picked, not only the contestants.
cheers.
I think the rules are great and the subject is also great. I think
it will be rather challening actually, which makes it all the more
interesting.

Not everyone is going to agree with all the rules or the subject,
but this will always be the case. You can't pander to everyone's
whims.

Set the rules and if people don't agree they don't have to
participate. Same with the subject.

dunno about free...but most challange that I know are hosted there.
it is convenient for viewing exif too.
I think it's $30 USD a year for 100mb? What if everyone chips in a bit? If you get 60 people, then that's only a dollar each. 120 people, 50 cents...well, you get the picture. I wonder how the Canon DSLR Challeges gallery people got theirs funded?
this is great!
Daniella started a thread last week about doing a little 300D photo
challenge. I have put up some webspace (with the permission and the
help from the fine people at InstantLogic) where we can keep this
contest.

I know that during the last week we had some heavy debates, now
it's time to move on. Emphatically I invite EVERY member of this
forum to join this contest. Let's all have some fun.
cool cool cool! I shoudl have the camera back tomorrow or thusday
so I'll be able to participate :) (I hope)
I'm a newby at organising a contest. I hope you all will help me
with suggestions how to run this contest and how to maintain it.
The website is here: http://therebelcontest.instantlogic.com . Let's
take a few days to straighten out the rules etc. and start next
weekend, 13 december, with the race. I have choosen a subject for
the contest: FRIENDS
yike..I think friends is a delicate subjects because many friends
will not want to be posted in the internet..how about something
less personal?

If the subject is friends, I would have to skip it. My friends
don't want their photos posted on the internet unfortunatly..and I
don't have a pet friend either.
In the next posting I'll give you my suggestion for the rules.
YOu can take some great pointers from the Oly forum contest. But
one rule woudl be that it must be taken with a 300D and the exif
intact!

If people use the proviced Adobe Element and use the "Save As" it
will keep the exif intact.

Does Pbase allow for free "special" Challenge type galleries like
this? Anyone asked?
I know that the Canon Talk Forum Challenge, The Canon DSLR Challenge and the Sony Talk Forum Challenge are all hosted on PBase with the blessings of PBase. In fact "Slug" who is, I believe PBase, regularly participates in the STF challenges.

It's worth looking into. Here's my $.02 why:

1. Every one can leave comments.
2. It's easier to upload images.
3. There's greater flexibility in surfing the sites.

7. Timeframe: 2 weeks for submitting, 1 week for voting, 1 week for
discussing the outcome.
To keep things 'moving' I would consider reducing voting and
discussion periods to 3 days each. Seems to me 1 week to submit
just one vote is an overkill. And discussion can continue into the
first week of next contest, so why delay it? 3 days is enough to
come up with a topic IMO.

Why not simply email the links to a picture rather than the images.

The links submitted should contain a thumbnail image of certain specifications (like 120x80) and a full size image with a maximum of 740 pixels accross so that the images can be seen by everyone, including those using 600x800 screen resolutions.

I think it would be a lot easier during the judging stage to not have to got through full size images over and over again.

Set a file size limit of 180kb for the large image and 20kb for the thumbnail.

Also, explain the subject in detail as to what is acceptable and what is not.

PS does not strip the exif..not for me. I have treid Element 2, PS 6, PS 7 and PS 8 and none are stripping the exif is you use "save as" and not "save for the web".

that is another rules that we shoudl consider..just how much editing is permietted? I woudl think that normal editing, level, contrast, sharpening, color balancing etc would be ok but no compositinng like adding a sky in one photo from another etc..
I got a question: After editing a pic PS strips the EXIF info....No
editing is allowed?

Far be it for a lowly fujimugger to be offering advise to such a grand forum as the Canon 300D but you could do a lot worse than checking out

http://www.fujimugs.com/challenge/

The challenges are very successful helped a grat deal by Dan who runs and organises it all. Study it carefully, you never know you might just learn something : )

Oh by the way I do have a vested interest, santa will be bringing me a 300D and I would like to be able to enter a properly run photo challenge, otherwise I'll just have to keep my 602.

Thats my 2p worth.

I think it looks too much degraded for quality. This could have a detrimental effect on your photo. I think 100kb limit is a bit drastic..150kb is already a bit better. it may not sound like much but it is a lot of difference in look.
I use no less than 8 or 10, depending on PS version. At 4 the pics
looks awful.

Thanks all for your input so far.

Some items and my considerations.

1. Timeframe. What I want is to have at least two weekends in the shooting period. There are a lot of people who depend on their weekend for practising this hobby. Also there are people who only have time in the weekend to examine the contributions. Lastly, if voting is done through email, I reserve some time for counting etc. to myself. I have a daytime job and can't garantee that I have the time during the week to do this quickly.

2. Voters. If we receive much votes, I'm not able to check every voter if he/she is a member for at least a month. Limiting the voters to being submitters gives me control. I think the suggestion of also having a public voting is a good. Maybe someone else can pick this up to organize.

3. File size. In the instantlogic account I have put up an example withing the by me suggested rulse. It's very good do-able to keep this within 100 kB. But as suggested I will raise it: let it be 200 kB.

4. Using PBase. PBase is also a good place to stay, but I don't have access to a free account at the moment. If someone else is willing to organize this via PBase I will be more than happy. I took Instantlogic because I knew it was free and someone had to start this thing going.

the file size depends on the subject as well...some photos might look good at that size but some others might look awful.

also what software did you use? we have to keep the exif intact I think so the "save for the web" option is kind of not an option.
