Has anyone tried the 10 mega pixel conversion for D1x on Capture 3.5? How well does it work, is it really a 10MP sensor?

The D1x has a 4028 x 1324 sensor, which it uses to generate a 3008 x 1960 final image when on it largest setting.

The D1x is unique in that it has rectangular sensor sites, such that the horizontal resolution is twice that of the vertical. (The sensor sites are twice as tall as they are wide)

In order to generate the 3008 x 1960, the D1x upsamples the vertical resolution and down-samples the horizontal.

This results is a h-res significantly better than most 5.4 mp digicams, but at a price that the vertical res is significantly worse. (The theory being that h-res is more desirable on the printed image)

Using this philosophy, Nikon have enabled the possibility to create 10mp images by, not doing any interpolation on the h-res but doubling the number of v-pixels. The images generated IMHO are very nice, but in practice, you don't actually gain much in the way of resolution, (if at all).

So no it is not a 10MP sensor.

I do this all the time with NikonView whenever I shoot NEFs (as noted in the previous reply, it's a simple algorithm, so I believe all software does this resampling to 10MP the same). While certainly not a real 10MP resolution, I've seen comparative shots on the Web showing the standard resampling to the 10MP version, and there is definately more detail available in the 10MP. I remember an image of a family picture where one person had a blue and white vertically striped shirt. It looked powder blue in the standard version and clearly striped in the 10MP version. All that said, you'll probably only notice the difference at extreme magnification, but I figure start with the most detail I can get.
