Well, my 2nd new D100 is coming in 2 days and I have one quick question. I've have been told that Costco prints digital images for about .19 cents a 4x6 and $2.99 for a 18x12. My friend told me they use Fuji photo paper and the quality was excellent... of course for us amatures and hobbiests I don't doubt it.

Should I not waste my time and just pick up a Canon i960... or use both..

Thanks,

Robert

The rumors of Costco $2.99 12x18 prints are true -- try it!

Whether you also want the convenience of making prints right from your computer is up to you. I find it handy.

Part of the fun of digital is having control of the entire process-including printing. Having said that - if you've never post-processed D100 files for printing, you're in for a shock-both in terms of dollar cost and effort. Personally, it's been 13 months since I got my D100 and I'm still learning how to use NC and PhotoShop-but I'm having lots of fun doing my own printing and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Robert,

IMHO, prints on photo paper (fuji crystal archive) appear better than any home printer output (inkjet or dysub). at $0.19, 4x6s are less than half of what you would pay for with inkjet or dyesub (consumables only - not including the price of the printer).

I have grown to dislike inkjets for 3 reasons - they are slow, the ink nozzels tend to clog, and they are noisy. Dyesubs dont have any of these problems, however they are more expensive, and the dyesub I have doesn't have the dynamic range of prints on Fuji's crystal arhive (or Kodak paper). BTW my dyesub is a Sony DPP-SV55.

Having said that, inkjet printers can produce excellent images - better than some print shops. Furthermore, I know nothing of the Canon i960, but I have used other Canons, HPs and Epsons. I like Epson the best of the bunch, but they are the slow noisy ones. HP is much quieter and faster, and produces comparable images. I also hear many good things about the Canon (but havent used).

You can get a Printer ICC profile for Costco's printers at:

You can use this in PS, or any other application that supports ICC profiles.
Hope this helps,

I have a S900 at home. ITs great for prints, but it actually cost more for me to print at home than at my local shoppers. I still keep the S900, it comes in handy when you want to get a print right away, but for the most part, I do all my printing at shoppers. ITs cheaper, plus the duration of your print will last longer, for me, my prints last 25 years, where as shoppers last for 65 years.

Costco's prints using the Fuji Frontier and Fuji Crystal Archive paper really are excellent. However, even though digital images now constitute a very fast growing 30% of Costco's print sales, Costco now offers 1hour service only for film. Digital is now promised only on a 24 hour turnaround basis. That is a terrible and short-sighted policy.

The only reason articulated for this new policy was that digital image processing was inconveniencing film users. That is silly, and even more silly when you realize that most consumer film users don't even care if their pictures are in focus. So why would they care if they have to wait their turn for film processing rather than displace digital processing?

This will drive my business elsewhere whenever I am in a hurry to get my prints (which is always). No longer can I upload my images, go shopping AND BUY STUFF IN THE MAIN STORE, and then pick up my finished pictures.

Hello? . . . anybody at Costco reading this? (Probably not.) Why alienate the fairly well-to-do persons who comprise your fastest growing image processing market (and who spend an hour shopping while they wait)? Hello???

Gotta ask, why do you have a 2nd new D100 - you have two?

Costco has done a very good job printing 4X6 for me. I usually color correct and sharpen, save to a CD and take them in. Thre have been couple that came out not looking right but mostly they have been quite good.

Your are not going to regret taking your digital images to Costco. The result is fantastic. I can have mine in an hour never heard of having to wait until the next day. The paper is great and the prices umbeatable.

I own HP Photosmarts (3 different models) and I am hardly using them specially the 5550 that gulps the ink. You really save $ printing at Costco.

The first one was in my hands for ONE day until I noticed it had a hot red pixel on the LCD screen... Sent it back to Ritz.com and they did not have anymore in stock so I had to purchase another one from J&R.com... long story... :)

The Costco here in Hackensack NJ still operates on a one hour basis. In fact they are installing a second Digital machine so two people can upload at the same time. This doesn't interfere with a Costco employee uploading on thier computer too. They sometimes do not live up to the one hour, but I have never gotten pictures back past two hours. Also to note each Costco photo is run by a seperate manager under his own rules.

Robert, Hi.

Don't know much about the i960 but I use an Epson 2100 (2200) and the output is stunning !! I do 4x 6 up to A3+ on it.

Costs a bit to run BUT the big advantage is the prints are archival !! The hidden cost with non-archival papers/inks is the reprinting. Many pro-shops now have a clear legal policy re: replacement as they have been burnt by the cost of reprints.

I have used various inkjets over the past 5 years and nothing comes close for 'non-fade' prints.
Everything else I have used shows fading and whites 'yellowing'.

If you can afford it - buy one. If you sell any prints you can do so with a high degree of confidence in their longevity. The only other thing that comes close is Fuji Crystal Archive.

Normal (well looked after) processed prints will fade after 5 - 10 years, if not sooner.

Gregory, I just finished posting below about my Epson 2100. Fantastic archival output. Haven't had any issues with it and it is quiet. Up to 3000 prints now. Slow, yes, expensive, yes.

I have owned HP's, Canon's and other Epson's but the 2100 is in a class of it's own.

I also use a pro-lab for large prints and these are done on a Chromira printer with Fuji Crystal Archive paper. There is a difference in the output - the Epson is a little more contrasty (good for scenes), the Fuji prints are stiil good for scenes but I also prefer them for my portrait work.
Both have their purpose.

Lloydy,

I cant say about the Epson 2100. But I have a 785 EPX. I love the output - looks just right for me. IMO Fuji CA seems a bit too contrasty - I'm still working on trying to get good prints.

Have you had any problems with the jets clogging up? I print in batches, going sometimes several weeks between printings. The ink dries in the nozzle and it takes me about 1/2 a print cartrige to clean it out, then I get blotches of ink on my first few outputs. at $25 a cartrige, this causes me much aggrivation. One plus for HP is that the printhead is in the cartrige itself, so I found myself wasting less ink (and money & time).

I DO love the output of the Epson. IMO, when printed at the highest settings it blows away just about any other printer I have seen, quality-wise and rivals prints from some print shops. I use my Epson extensively, mainly to print contact sheets and 8x10, for 4.6 or 5x7 I go to the shops.

Costco is the best deal in town. All three Costcos in S. Florida take 24 hrs.

Get to know the manager - and the results will ALWAYS be superb!!

Good luck withthe second D100. Hope that the date/time is not running...

I haven't used commercial digital printing. Do you have to leave your CF card? Or do they just down load the information when you make the order?

I've heard that 12x18s also take only 1 hour, but I havent had any experience with this. F CA should last as long as 35mm prints since its printed on the same photographic paper. Costco usually has a kiosk so you can bring your CF card and plug it into the kiosk and upload your images. I dont like to carry around my CF (1GB) card for fear of losing it so I usually just burn a CD and take that so if its damaged or lost, its no biggie. They will print JPEG and TIFF, and will automatically resize, so cropping is not necessary unless your crop is important to you.

Costcos use both the Fuji Frontier and Noritsu printers depending on where you go. You can also go to Walmart (Fuji Frontier) for FCA prints at $0.29 each - same deal, they use a kiosk to upload photos too (make sure you use the aladdin kiosk and not the Kodak kiosk).
