Hi all,

Is there any simple test I can do to test if IS is working?

I have a 28-135 IS and can't be sure it's actually operating properly. I've tried to test it by looking through the lens at full zoom toggling between IS on and off, and I don't appear to notice any difference. The image seems to move about the same amount while I have the shutter button depressed halfway. I hear the servos quietly making noise, but the image isn't any more stable.

Should it be very noticeable on a 28-135 at full zoom?

Thanks,

CH

Look at something very close at 135 and try again. Then again, maybe you have "nerves of steel". (-:

That's the problem....I don't! ;) My pictures aren't very shakey, but there's definitely some shake I was hoping to get rid of with IS.

Do you have the IS switch pulled back or pushed foreward?
I hear the little clunks also, especially in mode 2, the panning mode.

I'm not sure you can tell if there is a malfunction in the stabalizer or not, It should be interesting to hear if there is a test for this or not.
Anyone know?

I have the same lens at you do, and had the same question also. Some one here told me a solution and I tested and mine is working fine.

The way to do test is to point at any objext (doesn't have to be at full zoom) and press the shutter half way and shake your camera (not panning, if you pan, then it does not response to pan. PAN and SHAKE is DIFFERENT!) you will se the object, in respect to the surounding, will not move (or shake). Although your view finder will shake (of course, due to your hand shake), but the image inside will alwyas stay at the same position.

Of Course if you SHAKE too much and the movement is too drastic, then it will not work as well. BUT keep in mind if you PAN (EVEN SLIGHTLY) you image will pan. But that's not the purpose of the IS anyway. IIS DOES NOT COUNTER PAN!

I have a 28-135 IS but I don't see a MODE 2? There's only "ON' or "OFF" (1 or 0) on the lens. There's a panning mode? I would love that if that's the case. Because my counter shake pretty well, but usually "PAN" comes with "Shake". So if I can counter both at the same time, that will be great!
Or does "MODE 2" only comes iwth more expsive lens like the "L" series?

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so

My mistake, no mode 2 on your 28-135.
Thanks for keeping me honest.

I have the lens. When I have IS on I can hear, feel and see it You must notice the difference when you turn it off.
