Actual Memory in 512 MB CF Cards?

This question is to owners of 512 MB compact flash cards. How much memory is actually available to you? We all know that all CF cards do not give you the number of MB that they claim to have, so I'm just curious as to whether or not there is a difference among users as to how much available space is actually on their 512 MB card.

Thanks!

They have about 512 "hard drive megabytes", where a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. So they have around 512,000,000 bytes.

This is different than 512 "memory megabytes", where a megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes.

The difference is 24,870,912 bytes, about 10 pictures on a Canon S400, 2 shots on a Nikon D100.

You lose additional memory for the file system when you format the card, so a 512 meg card ends up with about 500,000,000 bytes availiable for use.

486MB on a 512MB with 16MB used right after "formatting" it in the camera.

That only adds up to 502MB, however.

Most times, it's not the tools, it's the 'tool' using them

--Why do you Format your card in camera!!!!!.....every card i have ever bought has never been formated n works like a charm with no probs....
just buy n put into camera n use...couldn't be simpler...

i'm rather puzzled as to why you all format before use, especially if card is new...

generally accepted as a good practice for ensuring the camera will not have trouble writing to the card.

"Formatting" in this context is little more than writing a fresh copy of the File Allocation Table onto the card.
