when I copy 35mm slides they usually turn out way too dark and slightly blueish, even though I use either daylight or a special slide-illumiator as background light.

Does anybody have experience iro optimal shutter speed-apertures? And at what pic size and quality do you copy the 35mm slides?--thanks in advance

I use an 18% gray card to calibrate the light source, using the color temperature custom setting. The slides look dark because the camera is trying to avoid saturation. Two things to do: use center weighted exposure and try the enhanced gamma correction to get better mid-range exposure.

The Nikon's diffuser panel is not as diffuse as the white milk-plastic of the Happenstance slide copier of similar design principle. Any extra diffusion you can add will help. A thin sheet of white milky plex above the built-in diffuser will darken the light source but spread it more evenly.

Then manually white balance off the empty slide copier's white-only image. Now your slides should look fairly well white balanced with only content creating off-color tints.

Slides are relatively high contrast and you may wish to experiment with Contrast Minus plus EV +0.3 or +0.7 boost to shift the gamma point up.

In program mode, set your exposure up two levels (from 0), set your white balance to Auto and be sure to set your lens to the slide copying adapter. I'm using a lightbox as a source of light. I have the camera set to Fine. I've had really good results with the slide copying adapter and my 880. Have fun!
