Does anyone upgrade from G3 to EOS10D just like me?
Do you discover that the G3's photo is more beautiful than 10D by default?

Photos which were taken by my old G3 were more beautiful a lot from print out than my 10D......

A bit sad.... =

i went from g2 to 10d and couldn't be happier! the color balance, the resolution, the ability to even get the shot with ISO 800, 1600, and 3200,...i could go on and on.

what lenses are you shooting with? do you shoot in RAW or JPG? do you spend any time processing?

Hi Codfish,

I just use a standard zoom lens 28-90mm which is taken from
my EOS300, I dunno if it's the focusing problem or not, but I'm
so sure that the default image output from G3 is more pleasing
and wonderful.

If all photos should do the post pocessing, it's so hard after you've
got hundreds of photos in a day. And... maybe I've a bad mistake
that I think the output from the Cam if the most natural...isnt it? ^ ^

The G3 is a point and shoot camera. This means all photos coming out of the G3 are processed and sharpened in camera. The 10D is a whole different camera and does very little to the image in camera. This inturns gives the Photographer there choices of what to do with the images. You must process each and every photo that comes out of the 10D. This is called digital workflow. IMO this is the best part of the DSLR is postprocessing and having total control of the camera and the final image unlike the point and shoot cameras.

So you have to either learn to postprocess or go back to the G3. Either way is personal choice.

But to help your out of camera pictures you also need good lenses. You also can change parameters in camera. But you will still need to sharpen and contrast boost each image.

Percy I think this is your number one problem at this time. The 28-90 is not a good choice for the 10D. Canons 28-135is or 24-85 would be a better choice to start out with.

Thanks Steven,

Could you recommend some lens to me but dont be so
expensive to me from start. And I also want to know, does
a lens really the major problem? A better lens, how an image
can be improved?? I'm a newbie and is trying my best to learn
more, any advices is highly appreciate...

Thanks a lot ^ ^

I get better quality from the 10D @ ISO 1600 than the G3 @ 400.

The focusing is almost like eternity on the G3.

If you want the G3 sharpness adjust the in camera sharpening on the 10D. I do the individual sharpening of the image when I get home and depending on the individual needs.

I still use the G3 for a leisurely doing nothing day when I do not want to lug around about 50 lbs of equipment.

Get the 50 1.8 for around 75.00. The Cheapest zoom I would recommend would be the Canon 24-85 USM around 300 dollars.

Since I bought my 10D, there has has been only one use for my G3... an extra battery holder/charger. I bought the 28-135 IS and 50mm f/1.8 and I am truely enjoying the 10D. This pictures out of the 10D are sharper and have way less noise than the G3. I wonder if I'll actually ever use my G3 again or if it is going to branded as an extra battery holder/charger. =)

Post some pics, Percy, so that we can sensibly comment. I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to blame the camera as you say yourself you are a newbie and it takes time to get to grips with something as powerful as the 10D. You will also need to learn to post-process.

As you can see form other pictures posted in galleries, the 10D does not have a problem about giving superb images if both the camera and lenses are OK and it is used in the right way.

This is not meant as a criticism, just trying to help you get to grips with this camera.

I had the same, upgrading from a G2 to a 10D (with a 28-135 IS lens, makes a fine combination).

I have the 10D for some months and never did any post processing, I got used to the pictures. Until two weeks ago, when for fun I opened a picture in Photoshop and did some sharpening etc. I was very surprised that this made such a big difference!

And with the 10D I can easily shoot with high ISO (800, 1600), where the G2 pics become very noisy.
But the G2 is still a very nice allrounder.

35mm X 14 X 1.6 = 784 mm equivalent, comes in handy every now and then. You need a rocket launcher size telephoto to reach that far on a 10D. And i can assure you they get heavy.

Also the flip-screen has been invaluable shooting overhead in a crowd.

Theres a 1.6 crop to the g3 also? I didn't think there was cuz it isn't even have the same aspect ratio as film camera. Anyway, I woulnd't go into the digital zoom the g3 because you can get better pics using photoshop to crop and resizing them (in my opinion). The way I figure for the g3 is 35mm x 4 x 1.75 (teleconverter) = 245 mm, so with my 28-135 IS on my 10D I'm really not missing too much, especially since the 10d has way better optics and IS (which probably will come in handy one day).

I'll give you the flip screen thing though. That has helped in the past, but there is no perfect camera... yet. BUT, with a little training on the 10D, learning how to aim the camera at your subject without looking and using manual focusing, you should be able to shoot over crowds. Either that, or get to the place before the crowd does and be in front of them. =)

I will still probably use my G3 when I don't want to bring 10D with me places like to amusement parks and what not where things can easily be stolen when I'm too busy being distracted having fun.

Not to disagree with you Steven, but I don't think the lense is his problem. He's referring to the in camera processing that the G2 does, the 10D is "flatter" by defualt.

I had a G3 and upgraded to the 10D - often at first glance the 10D images were not impressive when first viewed in their untouched state, but after Photoshop there is no doubt that the 10D produces superiour results.

Percy, you just might be happier going back to the G2, or any point and shoot, if you're not interested in post processing.

Hi Smith,

Actually, I dont mind if photos should do the post processing. I just
have 1 thing cannot be clarified - Does a SLR to do the post processing
is a must? That means no matter I use Nikon D1X, Fuji's SD-9 or something
DSLR machine... the post processing still be needed? Than, how the
photograher in the old days with their SLR? They used their skill, calculate
the exposure, DOF, color temp....etc, and illustrated their photos... They
might not to perform the post possing in the dark room...didnt it?

Or the truth is, EOS10D, or all series of Canon's CMOS DSLR, can
provide the very detail image, but because of the lack of luck about
the CMOS nature, so that we should do the post processing and perform
a better result?

My friend is using a Nikon D1X, he's a long time photograhper, just use
his skill and take the photo, no post processing is needed and the result
is wonderful...

A bit confusing... ^ ^

Hello Percy,

Again, I think 10D's picture is more "natural", the color representation is more "real". The P&S already add the post process for you and therefore it looks more "fake" (although it looks better). I think I read some where that all DSLRs are like this. They give you a more "accurate" representation of the scene. Although you can adjust the parameter (such as exposure time or aperture) or use filters to get some dramatic effect on the scene. If your friend have a Nikon D1X and he is a long time photographer, you should learn something from him, or do a side by side (with exact same aperture and exposure setting) photo session with him and see the differences. If it came out to be different, then do some post process and see if you can get the same result.

I have a G2 and I have greatly enjoyed using it and produced some nice images with it. I haven't used it much since I got my 10D, but recently I decided to take it along with me to a party (lighter and easier to carry). I'm not knocking the G series cameras, but my goodness what a difference. Very very slow focus and the overall results just weren't comparable. There is additional sharpness to the G2 images out of the camera, but there is also a lot more noise to deal with.
