Lens type in EXIF info?

You can't tell two lenses of the same focal length apart without some hints. For instance, say the IS version of the lens gives subject distance, that'd be a way to tell. Otherwise, you're out of luck. The camera doesn't know the lens by it's marketing name, just it's focal length.

Id like to se something like: EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM. Otherwise
you can't tell which lens is used...

The program is called DPEx (Yep, just like that). Get it while it's still trialware.
http://www.rysys.co.jp/dpex/en/

He expects to charge for it soon.

This is a composite. The thumbnail was borrowed from the thumnail lists in the program. The text comes from the EXIF display. I also like the really nice histogram display (separates the RGB channels and has lots of other display options). There is also an image viewer.

However, you can get the EXIF reader on which it's based for FREE:

You need an EXIF reader that will allow accurate reading of the
Maker Notes. For instance, here it is listed under the Focal Length
of the lens.

You must be impressed with the histogram. :-)

It still has a couple of bugs, and he's working hard on the translation for the menus from Japanese to English. Sometimes he still slips up on a few. But overall, the program does well. His efforts at tightening up the Maker Notes have been largely successful.

Your sample shows an 18-55 EXIF?

How does it perform?

It's not my picture. I obtained from one of the Japanese reviews recently posted here in this forum (not sure of the page now).

But I do like the reader a lot. I alternate between DPEx and the Exifer reader. Both are great and offer somewhat different value. Exifer is free, however, whereas the DPEx programmer intends to charge.

I doubt that the lens is "smart enough" to communicate that type of info.

Probably only the Olympus cameras with the 4/3 system will report this info.

Your thoughts on this?
Maybe I didn't express myself right, that's what I would like to
see in the exif: Lens production/marketing name!
