new 300D images!!!

Hi,

I took a look at the marina shot because it matches the kind of stuff I am interested in shooting

http://www.pbase.com/image/20909511

It shows the very obvious softness you'd expect with a Canon CMOS image- no real problem there.BUT- CA is definatley a factor in this image. There seems to be quite a bit of it in the boat details. Also the sensor seems to be struggling with highlights- they're definately blown on the boats. Lastly, is that noise I can see in the sky? Its quite obvious there's something going on there.

All in all, I'd say the 300D camera and lens combo really struggled here.

Cheers

Ther was very little photoshop work done with these images. Here is a list and what was and was not done:

8779 none
8782(3?) none (my Pbase page is unavailable)
8815 none
8822 PS7 levels
8826 none
8829 PS7 levels
8807 (macro with 1855 ISO 400 (very good))
8856 none
8875 some sharpening (not much)
8898 none
8892(3/4?) none (my pbase page is unavailable)
8902 none

My previous post talks about the camera/lens a littlte more. I don't think the D/R is that great. The camera tended towards overexposure on the beach/shore scenes with lots of sky. And autofocus was off. I did not post these shots as I did not shoot them and although I suspect a great number of issues lay with the shooters, I wasn't there. It is obvious that this camera as much as any other will take some learning. Many will pick it up and attempt to treat it as a p&s and will be dissatisfied. Others will learn to use it and shoot it - learn its limitations - and rave about it.
This was just posted in another thread. Didn't want it to get
buried. What do you think of the lens (and camera)?

The camera couldn't handle the wide range of light - white boats and dark sky. This picture probably would have been a problem for most DSLR's to one extent or the other. I was surprised at the oversaturation of the boat colors.

Would the default corrections for the SD9 would have given you the proper saturation?

Probably Parameter 2 would have brought that back in line.

I doubt that it was a far cry from what you really saw, right?

holy poop !.
does this mean my s45 with its CCD is better than the rebel with its CMOS ?

Well, I would have to shoot the SD9 at the same time. I have shot with the SD9 in that area several times and my recollection is that it would handle the colors substantially better with the blue (purple?) and red. It has better Dynamic Range I believe but the shot would still be a difficult one. It is probably bordering on "unfair" for me to say that without doing a side-by-side and that is impossible now. I am not clear on what you mean by "Parameter 2"

I didn't shoot any poop!! At least not since I was a scatologist! I have seen some shots from the S series. I don't think so. Although I think that the Series is a very good implementation for what it was meant to do. It is unfortunate that I did not have more time to play around with the Rebel.
