I'm back from Japan!!!! I must say that was the best trip I've taken. Good food, good views, good people, and good places to shop!

Cities visited: Tokyo, Atami, Kyoto, Osaka

Sight Seeing: Temples, Lakes, Castles, Museums, Forest Trails, Shrines

Hotels: Hilton, Keio Plaza, Royal Wing, Hotel Kyoto Okura, Pine Spa (some Japanese name but translated to that), Ringha Royal

Camera stuff I came back with: 60mm f2.8 Micro, Lowepro S&F Reporter 300 AW, Kenko MC UV filter for the 60mm, D2H brochure (amazing), Nikon All SLR Lense brochure (includes 24-120 VR and 12-24 DX too so its pretty new.)

In the D2H brochure, the D2H is listed at 490,000 yen or about $4110. The WT-1 for the D2H is 70,000 yen or about $590. The 17-55 DX is listed 220,000 yen or about $1850 and the 17-35 is listed as 230,000 yen or about $1930 so the 17-55 is cheaper! The 10.5mm DX Fisheye lists at 98,000 yen or about $820. The 200-400 AF-S VR is listed at 980,000 yen or about $8225. Nikon Capture 4 is listed as 15,000 yen or about $125. The SB-800 is listed at 60,000 yen or about $500. These are out of the brochure so prices may be lower in shops. Hope this info helps you price grabbers :D. If these were already stated then, oh well here it is again. I used an online currency converter from yen to US dollar.

I had a 1GB Lexar Pro card and I shot Jpeg because I knew I'd run out of room if I went RAW. Well I was right. I took all the pictures at Medium size at Fine quality. So out of around 590 have about 150 left.

Well I've been to Taiwan before and seen their department stores so I was used to those huge stores but Yodobashi completely blew me away. In Shinjuku they had so many buildings specific for each thing with many floors for each category. I was so surprised by Yodobashi because its like a multimedia enthusiastic dream store. I tried out alot of lenses at the Camera building of it. The people there are reallly friendly and foreign friendly too. I tried out the 70-200 VR, 45mm f2.8P, 50mm f1.8. Boy, I didn't know the 70-200 was that big and that heavy, at least it was for me :D. I walked out of the store with a 60mm f2.8 Micro because the deal was great compared to US prices, and I still got world wide warranty, yay!

At the places I visited I saw alot of other photographers using Nikon gear. So if you were shooting a temple, a castle, castle walls, a lake, a gold building, a bamboo forest, or any other popular tourist place - I might have seen you! If you post a picture of the place you were shooting then I'd know :D. I also stopped to see a Canon user shoot some interesting shots with his 1DS and a fisheye lense in a bamboo forest. He showed me what he had and it was a pretty cool effect with fisheye and the trees.

At Atami the hotel Royal Wing had an ocean view. I got up at 5:00 AM to take pictures of the sunrise. Amazing. I'll try to post up pictures later but right now I'm really tired and I'm out of room on my webspace just about.

Thanks to everyone that directed me to the right places in Japan and helped me around to know the good places! I had a great time and I thought I'd just share my good times!

Best Regards,

Charles

Hi, Charles.

Glad to know that you enjoyed so much in Japan. Can't wait to see what you discovered through your D100 in Japan too. I bought my D100 a month ago in Japan. I enjoyed it very much.

I have been living in Kanagawa (1 hour west to Shingjuku by train) Japan for about a year now for business. I have been to most of the places you visited. I have the similar feeling about Japan as you do.

Regarding the Camera price. Yes! Yodobashi is a very good place to shop camera equipment especially for lens. (The only problem for foreigner to shop there is that they only sell Japanese version which means there is no software or user menu in English. But it could be downloaded from Website.) Akihabara is better place to shop camera body for less price, where is not far away from Shinjuku. Nikon D100 is about 170k(jpy)=US$1.42K there, while it is 200k(jpy)=US$1.67k after dicount in Yodobashi. Check the below website for the best Nikon digital camera price in Japan. D2H is still not listed there yet unfortunately.

Thanks for the tips for where to buy. Unfortunately my webspace for storing pictures has run out at the moment and I have to delete some of them to allow me to upload :(. I think I'll have to find another way to get up all my pictures. Hopefully soon I'll be able to get some up.

Charles

Nice pictures!!

It seems you have a lot of local friends and attended many local events in Japan. I believe that's the greatest way to experiense and enjoy the culture and friendship other than just sightseeing.

Thanks for the pictures.

Fei.

BTW, It seems you have a very nice company while traveling.
I just got back a few weeks ago form a 3 week trip to japan..
bought a "ton" of stuff over there and took thousands and thousands
of photos.

I jsut uploaded the stuff onto my site.. under the heading "Japan
Summer 2003"

The lenses that were used the most were the 24-120mm AF-S VR, 50mm 1.4 (for all the night shots) and the 70-200mm AF-S VR. And my biggest dirty secret was the coolpix 2100 because I took her with me all the time and usually when I was in places I whipped her out... so about 15-20 of the pics I took in my two Japan 2003 galleries were taken by that "little piece of $hit" hehe as I put it.... but it gets the job done I guess :)

In Japan I had to hand held everything and just use VR, the results were quite nice.. even in my 12 inch by 18 inch prints that I did at Costco. I have a big backpack... a Lowepro to carry most of my junk in.. it was around 10-15lbs most of the time.

Yes... this was my 4th trip to japan since 1999....

My gf is japanese and we went to 9 cities in the 3 weeks when I was there... we met up with my and her friends in Japan.. it was a real blast. Besides taking photos, the places and temples we went to were much more breathtaking than most of my photos can actually show.
