I'm a newbie and have been comparing Minolta Dimage7hi, Nikon 5400, 5700 and Cannon G6. I need zoom for shooting in a gym with no flash. Also need quick focus/ low lag time.

I thought I was sold on the Minolta, but with the merger, am I boarding the ship too early?

Any other suggestions?

Much thanks!

I doubt any of them will give you what you want. Freeze frame action shots. Right?

Digitam,

Melanie's got this one right. If you are inside of gyms and can't use a flash, you are in trouble. Zoom will be the least of your worries. A fast lens and high ISOs will be the solution.

Unfortunately, none of the DC's have fast enough lenses and ISO capabilities over 800. Even at ISO800 the images are awfully noisey. IMO, unusable without some noise reduction post processing. The fastest DC at ISO800 will only get you to 1/125. For sports stop action you should be @ 1/500.

One way to pick up these extra 2 stops is with a 10D @ ISO800, or ISO1600, and an 85mm (136mm) F1.2 lens. Unfortunately, this is a $3000 solution (subtract about $700 if you substitute a used D30, for the 10D).

Having said all that, you can get some usable stuff from a few of the high end DC's. I'd recommend you check out the Sony 717, the Minolta D7i (or Hi) and the Fuji 602z. They all have lots of zoom as a side benefit :-)

Good luck,
Steve

I'm pretty sure the Minolta 7hi is the one, (this minute). But, what about the rumors of a DSRL and a 7hi replacement coming soon? Is it too early to get on board with Minolta?

I don't know about a Minolta Dslr. I'd like to think there's something in the works. But, there's no hard evidence of that :-( There is talk on the MTF about the possilbe D7 replacement. The A1. If you can wait a few weeks, things might get clearer. Then again, they may get even murkier...LOL

The D7i, or Hi, is a very good camera. If that's what you've settled on, go for it. There will always be something in the future that piques your interest. If you wait to find "the one". You might be camera-less for years ;-)

Good luck,
Steve
