Would it be a good idea to have a separate forum dedicated to infrared photography on Dpreview?

I and some other people thought it would be nice to have an infrared community where people from all kinds of cameras can share their experience.

I was wondering what the Sony people think about it?

Daniella,

I think it would cool if for no other reason than to have a central repository for all the great IR info that's now spread throughout the other forums.

You've got my vote :-)

'If one really wishes to be master of an art, technical knowledge of it is not enough. One has to transcend technique so that the art becomes an 'artless art' growing out of the Unconscious.'

There are probably more IR photographers in the STF than in all of the other forums combined. :-)

That's a good thing, but I doubt that it would convince Phil to open up another forum. He's usually very reluctant to that sort of thing (think Canon SLR Lens Talk and Nikon SLR Lens Talk).

Question: Any idea how much the other forums are doing IR work? If you could find support there, it might at least give you a foundation for petitioning Phil. But I think he'll take a different stance on it.

Another option might be for someone here to start up a webpage with a gallery specifically for IR work. Or setting up a sort of group pbase gallery on IR exclusively.

I hope you guys come up with some solution, either way. The IR work folks do here is beautiful.

Whiler perhaps an interesting idea I am 99.9999999% sure it will never happen. Of course it's up to Phil, but I doubt he would ever create a forum for one specific type of photography. If he did, he'd then have to deal with the people crying out for a landscapes gallery, then a portraits gallery, then on and on and on.

Just my thoughts.

yes sure there is, but there are so many of them in the OLY forum and also many in the Minolta forum.

there are also some people in the yahoo groups that are a bit tired of the advertizing and would love to have a forum that is better organized on infrared...probably they would join here too.

Maybe it could be a specialized forum that would include thinks like IR photography, landscapes, panoramas, portraits, time lapse photography, macro, and so on. Just a thought. It would become a place where one could go when trying to get creative in one of the specialized areas.

there is a specific forum for gallery though...and I think that infrared photogrpahy is very different from other category of photography because it require special equipement. Where you usualy see category for landscape, nature, portrait etc..you never see any category for infrared.

For now I am wondering how many of you think it woudl be a good idea?

Hi Daniella,

I would rather see it salt and peppered in all of the groups. It recruits people into IR that way and what I personally want for the good of the community is for camera manufacturers to have removable IR Block filters and IR capable cameras. The only motivation would be a very strong public demand.

An isolated IR group would extract many IR people from the main stream and might slow down those newcomers.

Cameras being sold at a high price as fine light gathering devices and then having major bands of light cut off on purpose makes everyone lose.

But. it would be nice to see your work more often though. Some of your photos have inspired me.

Now if Phil could call it "The National People's Infrared Movement" and we could have buttons, bumper stickers and picket signs, dues, hire a lobbyist, I might change my mind. :-)

That's my agenda, too.

Exactly, I want a camera, not a mommy. Kodak makes DSLRs that have removeable hot mirror, you don't see them wringing their hands over what the users might take pictures of when the hot mirror is removed. I'd like to see more corporate courage from Sony on this issue.

yes I agree with that. If Sony would make it removable, then they would not be responsible for each person action no? That quite limit law suits but the thing is that you can see more skin at the beach than with the infrared!
An isolated IR group would extract many IR people from the main
stream and might slow down those newcomers.
slow down? or peak interest of other people.

yes I agree with that. some people went to the extend of removing the danmed thing...I was tempted to do so as well...very tempting.

Did you know that the Minolta D7 is selling for more expensive refurbished than the newer and better model of D7i ? I could have got a D7i brand new for the same price that I got the D7 but the D7i and D7hi have a strong hot mirror that produce a very strong central spot... The only explanation for this different in price is the ability of the D7 to do infrared. I wish that camera manufacturers would get the idea.
But. it would be nice to see your work more often though. Some of

thanks but I don,t always feel comfortable to post Minolta samples in other forums :)

Oh, I was just teasing Gene. His question covered the entire gamut of photographic topics, like the S&G Forum. ;-)

I still think the better way to do this would be for some good soul to set up a webpage gallery and forum designed for it.
no, I mean like a infrared forum, dedicated to the technique of
infrared photography..not just some display gallery.

I guess that the reason you get so many thoughts on this is because the site in general and the forums in particular may not fit well into Phil's scheme for how he wants to organize things.

Still, the best suggestion here would be to send some feedback to Phil and ask him what he thinks. That's what really matters. Present your ideas to him in a logical way, visit other forums and gather some data, and then present the request. But keep in mind that in the end, it's Phil's decision.

OTOH, if you can build your own website and gallery, then you get to make the calls.

I sympathize with you.......I don't understand why Phil insists on sending him emails ONLY through the feedback forum, and then doesn't reply to them. And then in desperation, someone tries posting in the forums, and they get yelled at.

Anyway, I would much prefer to see a separate IR forum right here on dpreview. There are enough "other" places to go, and I think most people here come here to discuss photography more than anywhere else. How about we all send Phil a request......he'll have to reply to some*one..........right? K.
