717 Manual Settings

Thanks to everyone's comments/suggestions on my problem yesterday, I've started using the fully auto mode on my dsc-717 and the pictures are looking better and better. Does anyone know of a guide though, that will give me the optimal manual settings, for what kind of pictures I'm taking, or what exactly I'm trying to get out of the camera?

I'm also looking into getting a telephoto lens for my 717, can anyone make any suggestions? Looking to spend no more then 200-300.

I'd just start by noting what settings the auto modes are choosing for you, either directly in the camera or from exif...then make at least a mental note of what they are under certain circumstances, types of shots, locations, etc...
