I bought a G3 from Dell 2 months ago and I have come across a problem occationally:

When I making some shots, the camera suddenlly freezes. That is: if I push the shuttle button afterwards, nothing happens. The LCD is blank. The only way to correct it, is to turn the power off and on again. This has happened to me about 8-10 times out of about 800 shots.
Is this a common G3 problem or a unique problem to my G3?

If it needs to be repaired, how is your experience with Canon service dept?

Thanks in advance.

I bought mine 3 days ago and I have seen this problem in 3 o 4 times.
The image in the LCD go black, but it is possible to see de menus.

I correct it, with the DISPLAY button to de-activate and re-activate de LCD display.
I don't know if is common in the G3....
Must return the cam??

Is the screen blank or becomes black?!

My G2 sometimes freeze (no response after half press the shuttle) after I take tons of photos in a short time. It seems that it's overheat or overload that need some buffer timing to cool down. But this happen ONLY when I take too much photos at a short time and this happen few time only.

I have taken it to Canon for a checking and they said they cannot find this problem.

Since it happen not frequently, I have no idea on how to show Canon further about this problem, and my Canon G2 warrany has expired for nearly 1 yr now...

Well, I guess this may not be a common problem since I get only a few response for this post. This definitly is a problem for me because I can always make it happen within about 100 shots. The LCD is blank, meaning nothing showed up, just like it was turned off. However the menu LCD on the top still show normal status, no errors.

I also feel it is a little bit hard to show this problem to Canon and they can always go back and say "can not reproduce". I still want to know the procedure for the Canon repaire and your feeling about the services they provide? Thanks.

The LCD will shut down on it's own if left on for a while even if the auto shutdown feature is disabled. It should turn back on again with the display button. I will get lock ups sometimes but can usually clear them by twiddling things. Don't know what causes them but no biggie if they can be cleared. The camera OS is probably based on W95 :> )

Have you guys installed the OS Upgrade to the G3? I've had my G3 about two and a half months and it was released about the time I bought the camera. I installed it the same week I got it. I'm sure it's still available from Canon. I don't know if it is related to this problem or not but It couldn't hurt.

It wasn't difficult to install, just make sure you follow the directions exactly. I've never had the problem you mention at all.

Thanks for your reply. I did update the OS after I bought it 2 months ago. That seems does not help in this case. I am also not sure if this is LCD timeout problem. Becasue, when I was doing the stitch assistant mode, part of the previous shot plus all the assistance information showd up on LCD, it was the current picture portion that is blank and not displayed.
Kind of strange problem, yeah?

Hi friends

I remember there was a post for this problem a while ago. They also mention the way to fix it up. But I cannot remember the exact link, try a search for it and post up the link if you find it.

As the problem sounds as though it is intermitent, if you send it to canons repair centre, they will return the camera to you unfixed, as they only take a brief look at it to see if they can easily see a problem on the first go. Only on the second time you send it back will they investigate the problem fully, by doing, more indepth tests. This is a policy of many electronic service centres for intermittent problems, and can be frustrating for the consumer, as you will be without the device for up to 6 weeks.
