Canon EOS-10D AF Problem Acknowledged

Canon France has taken the first step to publicly acknowledge the 'front focus' and 'back focus' problems some owners of the 10D have been experiencing. As usual, when the problems were first voiced on the different digital camera forums, some took it upon themselves to castigate the 'complainers' because 'my 10D focuses perfectly, so go learn how to take pictures.' But when more complaints started pouring in and this time from professional photographers, we knew something was not right. Luminous Landscape made an open appeal to Canon USA to clarify the situation and are still awaiting a reply. French photography magazine Chasseur d'Images made a similar request to Canon France and received an official acknowledgement of the autofocus problem. (They're still maintaining it affects only a small percentage of owners, though.) The good news is that it is easily fixed with a simple firmware adjustment by Canon. Well, there you have it. It happens. Just don't complain about it, send it in for repairs. And enjoy your excellent Canon EOS-10D.

Thanks, Lance. That's very interesting for someone like me who's sitting on the sidelines waiting to see this focus problem resolved or disproved before jumping on the 10D bandwagon. However, I couldn't find the article on the page you linked.

It's somewhere at the bottom of the page Joe. Actually, after posting this msg, I went over Canon SLR forum. Interestingly, many there stated that they don't believe it. I can't confirm it. Just posted what I read.

The firmware upgrade will not fix the problems. The camera must be sent in with the lenses to callibrate them to each other. The problem may reappear with new lenses. Although I agree that many/some people do have problem lenses-camera combos, the AF system and the differences between lenses do lend themselves to misfocus if one doesn't thouroughly understand their equipment. 2 new lenses and a lot of practice and trial and error, later, I'm starting to get an acceptable number of "on" shots with my 10d. User error or equipment? Some of both. Cindy

Cindy,

I really want to move over to DSLR, want those higher ISOs. But I'm just not comfortable with dropping $1000+ for a camera body and then playing a game of Russian Roulette with every lens I buy for the camera.

I've seen great results from the 10d but I have also heard too many stories of frustration with the focusing. I'm going to have to wait a bit and see how this sorts itself out.

I think most of the cameras do not actually have the focusing problems. What we are seeing is variation in lenses, which has always been an issue although being new to slrs I wasn't aware of that. I don't think that will change anytime soon. Also, the AF systems are different than what we are used to in the Sony cams, and I don't think that will change either. Another factor is the DOF which can be difficult to manage when you are used to such a generous portion with the 7*7. A slight misfocus will put your shot just enough out of the focus plain to make it look soft. That will not change either. It just takes some getting used to. I'm over 3000 shots in less than a month and I'm finally just starting to get it down and still have a lot to learn. If you want one get one. I would just be careful about who you buy it from and if you can check out each lens thoroughly in the store. That is something I don't have the luxury of since I live 90 miles from the nearest camera store and they don't have much selection. It is a great camera that requires an investment in not only $$$$ but time and patience. This is more or less a grab shot in low light taken from 20 feet away (although my camera was on a tripod set up for some landscapes). I would have botched the focus horribly the first week I had the camera. Now - I think it did quite well. Zoomed in at full res you can see more detail than would ever be necessary. . . lol

I had to return two (2) 10Ds to get what I paid for, but I am thrilled with the results I am now getting. Reference my recent CSLRTF post on this point....

I know some have been frustrated, and I have spent time frustrated as well, but once the equipment/acclimation curve is ldone, the reward is tremendous. I cannot describe how much enjoyment I get from my new camera.

I think Harry is right on target.

Before we had forums such as this one, we wouldn't even have known a problem exists with the 10-D. It would be foolish to ignore the statistical evidence.

Since I'm not a pro, I can use my 717 and wait for a DSLR with no problems. If I were a pro or semi-pro and had to have a DSLR now, I'd go with another camera. Simple as that.

They all have their demons. I just had a conversation with a Nikon using pro (30 years). He wasn't surprised at my AF frustrations. Said if I wasn't happy with Canon's system definitely don't go to Nikon as it is even worse. He doesn't trust AF on any of them and uses almost all MF. I'm not making excuses for the manufacturers, I just think SLR systems have some degree of difficulty in getting AF systems to work perfectly all the time with all lenses in all conditions. Cindy

Joe,

The 10D shots you posted are amazing. So clear and rich in suble color and tone, and no noise to speak of. Of course, the compositions are wonderful.

What was wrong with your first two 10Ds, and how did you find out? Also, what lens(es) did you end up with?

Question is, will the French surrender to the AF problem or combat it?
