Today I said goodby to my sweet 707, my idea was to run and buy the 717 the same day, but... rumors say it is coming a new stunning model!

Since I can't live without a digital camera, I bought a used like new DSC-P8, it's small. it's cool, but it's not 7x7...

what would YOU do:

1- buy the 717 and sell it when will come out the new "XXX" just to see if it's really worth the money (but I'm sure yes).

2- wait, live with the P8 and film cameras during the holidays and buy the new one sometime near christmas (maybe)
3- buy somethimg else.

A dilemma to be sure. For what my opinion is worth (not much), it makes no sense to buy a 717 just to sell it when XXX comes out, at least economically, that is. On the other hand maybe economics has nothing to do with the decision and need or impulse has everything to do with it. Rationality would say live with the P8 and film cameras until the new one comes out. Or, of course, you could buy something else like the Minolta 7Hi. But then think about this: If Sony is coming out with a new camera in the next 6 months, what are the odds that Minolta and Nikon (and everyone else) are just going to sit with their current offerrings? Ahhh, decisions, decisions, decisions.

Hi Yuri,

There will be a number of significant new announcements before the end of the year - it happens every year before Christmas. The F717 takes great pictures, I really like mine – but the F717 will probably have a replacement within 6 months (just a guess), and you do have a camera to “hold you over” until Christmas, so why not wait.

Now some thoughts on expanding your options. Since there will be many new announcements, not just from Sony, why not consider other vendors as well. Many folks on the forum have bought the Canon EOS 10D and still participate in this forum – certainly the most friendly at dpreview. So since you can still participate here even if you buy another brand. Significant new sensor technology appears probable on many new cameras by year’s end. Before Christmas there will probably be a great variety of choices from many vendors.

Its easy to get committed to one vendor’s cameras – less relearning and I know if I’ve been happy with a product I tend to stick with the same vendor for new products. Although I really like my F717, the memory stick situation has led me to consider other vendors as well. If your existing investment in memory sticks is not enormous, it may be worth considering other options. It may even be less expensive to start with a new system since competing memory is so much less. This assumes that there is a competing system you will like before the end of the year.

The best.

Just get a camera, get out, and take some pictures and don't be concerned about this newest and greatest model, cuz ya know what.. IT'S DIGITAL CAMERAS!! The next newest thing comes out every two weeks and you'll drive yourself nuts about it...

Go out, but a 717, you know it takes excellent pictures, what's the hold up? And you REALLY going to use the extra couple features they toss in on the next camera?? (what, an extra megapixel??)

Keep in mind you'll get the 717 much cheaper now then you will the latest and greatest in 5-6 months..

Well Thanks R.J. I really like the 10D my only problem is that I have many Nikkor lenses so I would chose the d100 or S2 but they are too expensive and too big, the 7x7 was very good as size/quality/cost and yes, the MS WAS a problem, now they are getting cheaper everyday and I already have 5x128mb

I've add a new possibility, sell the P8 ('cause I got it at an incredibly low price) and buy a P10 just to wait christmas.

I'm just sad I'll not do the incredible pics I did in my last trip in NY with 707 in my next holidays :-(

Who knows how much will cost the new XXX model... I hope not too far from the 717 when come out!

I totally agree with Jamie.

If you want the latest and greatest, you'll be waiting forever. New technology is announced on a weekly basis. I waited soo long before getting the 717, but finally you get to the point when you realise its just nuts to wait. Time is money, you're missing out on great shots today just because you want to wait for what comes around the corner, and the corner after that, and so on...And in all honesty, how much better can the next 7x7 really be? I can see in maybe 3 years it would be totally different, but in a few months? Plus the 717 price right now is just too good to miss out on in my opinion. But I hear you, I went through the exact same thing. It is a risk you take whatever you do.

And you could get hit by a train tomorrow. Do you really want to waste your life away waiting on something that MIGHT be a good thing?

I just bought the F717 and I am glad I did. I have been without a digital camera for too long. (I had an F707 at one time)

Let's say Sony announces the new 828 camera today. Then you wait 3-6 months for it to come out. You spend 1200.00 instead of $600-$700 for a F717. And let's say you get this new 828 home and it is a piece of garbage. Then you realize how much you miss your F707.

Remember all the serial number threads of early models?

From modems to gadgets I have been first in many arenas and finally woke up that I will stay a version behind and wait and see what others have to say and when the price drops then maybe I will upgrade. It is too expensive to be first and sometimes the manufacturer will instead of upgrading for a fix, they come out with a new model. ie;F707-> f717

Question : When should an Eskimo build his igloo ?
Answer : No matter when he builds it , it is the wrong time.
Same goes for buying a digital camera.

While the market dictates Sony will have a 717 replcaement sometime before Q1 '04, there are no specific plans or infomation on such a camera. I don't know about you, but I don't like the idea of waiting for something I know nothing about. With cars, at least, you can see pics and specifications long in advance. Not with digital cameras.

While I'm sure the 717's replacement will be a superior camera, you have no idea what the competition will be like at that time, either. Who knows what Canon and Nikon will have in store?

I guess my point is...you can go on waiting forever...and continue to miss some great shots in the meantime.

Why not just buy the 717 now and when the next big thing comes out sell it off and buy the new one. Why live with a camera that you aren’t happy with to save a few bucks down the line? It’s only money, and you might be missing out on pictures you will never be able to get again.

I encountered the same quandry. I used to own a 707 and sold it for no loss. I've been using an S85 (which I love), and a P7 (great small digicam). I was going to upgrade to the V-1, but its form-factor just doesn't fit me. I love its 717-like features, but I need a faster lens. I'm also a left-eye shooter, do it is not quite ergonomically correct.

I was going to wait for the 828, but then had a change of heart. I pulled the string on a 717 yesterday after a post on the STF about incredible Dell pricing...15% off, then an additional 15% off at checkout. My total was $577.28 including free shipping, plus tax.

My mindset was that if I waited for the 828, it would probably be introduced at over $1000. That's $400 more than was I spend on the 717. I had to weigh the extras that the 828 would probably include.
  • Smart Zoom introduced on the V-1
  • Great TTL Flash Support on the Hotshoe
  • 6-8 Megabyte Sensor
  • More White Balance Options
  • Longer Zoom
These features are very nice, but I'd rather have the $400-$500 in my pocket...and the thousands of images in my files that were taken before the 828 comes out.

I don't require more than 5MP. My next upgrade will be when a brilliant camera comes out with the Foveon sensor. Keep an eye on Techbargains.com for similar bargains and discounts from Dell. They most certainly will be posted on this forum

Well.. what can I say.. I think I decided... I'll buy the f717

watching your galleries in the forum and listening to your comments.. well, how can I live without a serious digicam until christmas?

Here in taly the F717 cost no less than 1000euro (here everything is always more expensive..) so I think I'll be able to sell it when the "828" will drop price after some months is out, so I can be sure it's a great camera (as 717) and to see what will build nikon/canon .

For a moment I was thinking to nikon D100 but it's too big, too expensive (even if I have many lenses) and the quality after all is not much better (ok, it's quite noise free and full manual).

The F717 is definetly SEXY :-)

Hi!

I think he got the 717 from the Dell discount that was during this weekend. It had 15% off the original price and an additional 15% off after checkout. Sadly this discount has disappeared now.

You can ask Your friends to try and pricematch at Sears with bilibi.com, where the 717 is for sale @ $635, but watch the price it is changing all the time, during the weekend it was $645 and a week or so back it was $590.

I hope this helps,

Sven

Yes...exactly right. I bought mine from Dell over the weekend with their 15%-15% deal. It's incredible. I kept looking at the screen as I was checking out to make sure it didn't go away. I can't believe that you can buy such an incredible piece of equipment for $577.

These deals tend to resurface. So keep an eye on this forum, and chech Techbargains.com everyday. Good luck!

I do like some of the new features of the V-1 also. I do so many things manually that the scenes mode isn't important to me.

I have also never liked the continuous zoom feature on cameras. Nikon seems to use it to death. It eats up battery life, and just the sound is annoying. For action shots, it does serve somewhat of a purpose.

VX Movie is O.K. If you need a digicam for video, I guess its better than the HQX mode.

These extra features are certainly not dealbreakers for me. The only truly viable feature that I would love the bring over from the V-1 to the 717 is the TTL hot shoe. That would complete the 717 for me.
