I got up this morning before anyone else and decided to take my camera out and try out my new t-con 17. The following pictures are not that great but I just had to share this story. (Morris I don't know how you do it, I can see I need some more practice to get clean sharp pics with my t-con 17)

As I broke the top of the hill near my woods this morning (even though I was moving slowly and quietly) I spooked some deer. I went into the woods and sat on a fallen tree. The strange thing was that I kept hearing a deer snorting not too far away. Usually when you spook deer they are gone and you don't see them again. This one was hanging around for some reason. So quietly made my way to the top of the hill and sat between a tree and my barb-wire fence.

I then noticed a movement in the bushes below. At first I thought it was a Racoon or a Porcupine but then I saw an adult female deer and this thing was moving right toward her. I then realized it was a fawn. The mother stayed around and was snorting to call her young one.

The mother then came out to check things out and see if I was gone That is when I took these pictures. The fawn never came out and I left after these 3 pics so as not to disturb them or stress the mother out too much.

I'm going to get some more practice with my t-con and try situating myself down there in a blind to see if maybe I can catch mom and fawn together.

Thanks for reading and looking. It was an unbelievable experience and I just had to share :)

Ron.

Excellent shots, worth the wait.

We usually have a couple baby deer living in the woods in our back yard (MI) each year. So cute, ya just want to run up and smooch them. Apparently, the sheriff told me, that's NOT legal in USA. I'd post a link but my precious wife has "lost" them somewhere in pbase ??

Hi Ron,

In the first 2 photos you focused on the branches in front to the deer. Try using spot metering which also gives you spot focus.

Thanks jkirk,
I live in michigan also. I've got 30 acres of woods, hills, apple trees and Hay Field. I Love it! A never ending supply of wild animals. I have a couple of hawks that feed in my hay field and I've seen a few coyotes also.

Thanks for looking
Ron.

Per-Atle,

You mean like this LOL

This was a shot taken when I first spooked them.

Hi Ron,

Morris
Thanks Morris,

It does seem the branches are more in focus in the first two shots. However, I was using spot metering and had the square on the deer to focus. I'm not sure why I got the results I did.

I guess I thought it was from having the t-con on there and not using a fast enough shutter speed (handheld). The other thing I thought of was that I had it on soft sharpening. I tried to add USM in PS but I'm not very good at that and don't really understand USM. I still have some work to do.

Thanks,
Ron.

Ron, how did you get access to my pictures? LOL. Yes, very much like that. I was out again today and spooked two more without getting any pictures at all....
