I posted this question yesterday and I didn't get a clear answer. When I set the camera (Sony F717) to full automatic mode (GREEN CAMERA DIAL) and I take a picture indoors I often get the "hand" icon. If the camera is set to Auto mode why do does the icon show up? When this happens what should I do? Also, when I shoot in doors and in Auto mode (Geen camera icon) the ISO is usually is set to 100. If I set the ISO to 200, will this remedy the "hand icon" problem. Any help would be very appreciated----Thanks

It means you are shooting at low shutter speed, so need to hold the camera steady. If you change to big ISO, like 800, I would expect this to go away (but I'm not suggesting to shoot at ISO800). I would suggest that if the shutter speed is less than or equal 1/60, then forget about that hand waving thing.

Bobby,

The "hand icon" is a warning that tells you that the shutter time in combination with the focal length (zoom setting) is likely to cause camera shake. This means that you should at least try to support the camera in these conditions. Switching to a higher ISO value can cause the icon to disappear since a higher ISO value will result in a shorter shutter time, reducing the risk of camera shake.

If the icon appears in auto mode when you are shooting indoors you have probably switched of the flash. This causes the camera to choose relatively long shutter times in order to be able to get enough light in. The long shutter time causes the risk of shaken images. Switching on the flash is an easy solution, choosen higher ISO rates is the alternative (but has limited effect depending on the amount of available light).

Hope this helps.

Switching to a higher ISO may eliminate the shaking hand. Remember though, you can't change the ISO in the AUTO mode (see pp. 106 &107 in owner's manual).

The hand icon is just a warning to let you know that blur can occur from camera shake do to the slow speed.

In Full Auto mode is not much you can do. You might have the flash turned off. Turn on the flash.

Or you can switch to P mode and use a higher ISO (but you will have more noise).

Bobby,

it might interest you to know the basic rule that in order to achieve a sharp picture without the use of a tripod, the shutter speed should be 1/ (when using a 35 mm camera system). This means that if your hand-shaking is not out of the ordinary, you should set a shutter speed of at least 1/50 at 50 mm, 1/100 at 100 mm and so on. This also means that the more you zoom, the higher the risk of blurry pictures. Fascinating enough, the 717 obviously knows this rule and shows the shaking hand icon in accordance to the zoom setting (for example, at full zoom (=190 mm on a 35 mm camera), you will see the icon it at shutter speeds slower than 1/200 seconds. Very nice feature which lacks on my Canon S 30...

Regards, Jerry

As all of the previous posters have pointed out, your shutter speed is too low to ensure a sharp picture under normal "handshake"- conditions, unless you are of the very few with extremely steady hands OR you shoot off a tripod, in which case you can disregard the flashing hand alltogether and still get sharp pictures (unless your subject moves). As long as you know that the camera needs total steadyness and either provide it or risk unsharp pictures, you are OK. So now you know and -may conduct yourself accordingly or not.

Choosing a higher ISO setting WILL Improve sensitivity which in turn will result in faster shutter speed (depending on the mode you shoot in) which COULD remove the hand icon, BUT, it will LOWER the quality of your images.

Try the different ISO settings out and see.
