EOS D30 and Green color troubles

I think more action we produce about this problem, sooner Canon will fix it

You can blame it completly at Canon, they got a big bug here, the
D30 simply can't handle some colors. I just wasted one day shooting
129 pics of kids in carnival costumes, lots of bright colors like
blue, purple, green. Unfortunatly blue, purple and green, bright
and shiny where in all the costumes, - result 129 pictures and not
a single one with correct colors.

I have tried JGP, RAW, WB and so on, but the D30 is very consistent
(witch is kind of a good thing normally), and for certain color is
just can't do the job, - and far from, colors are way off.

To bad, because the rest of the D30 I really love, furtunatly the
AI Focus problem is of no concern to me.

I am sorry but I can't use a camera, witch for a certain
color-range gives me totally random colors.

Ken, don't try and sweep this under the carpet, even a big carpet
won't hide this one...

Canon action is needed....

The LAST thing Canon will do is acknowledge any problem of this sort. They will quietly have a firmware update for something else ( like autofocus) and throw in a correction or two for other things...like color.

Well, I live in Europe (DK), and that’s just a lot of small Canon offices, and things like this never seems to get through to Canon.

I have posted this at RG-site for Chuck Westfall from Canon, however he has not replied to that tread (a big one now), and I am not sure why. Usually he does reply quit quick.

Getting Canon US to deal with the problem seems to be the better way, its one very big office, and they will have to care about this.

(Canon does even not have an office in DK for photo equipment, it’s handled by a distributor, who also do Minolta and Samsung)

It seems to me, that this problem is very consistent, and I always seems to be able to correct it by going to selective colors in PS, and either go Blue and adjust the Cyan or go Cyans and adjust the Magenta, depending on picture.

So far this has always fixed the problems, even with all of the test-photos I have seen from different people. Now since the problem is very consistent, it’s surely down to some algorithm that the D30 can’t get around correctly, and if so it can be fixed in firmware.

So to get back to your problem of Canon’s attention, well we don’t seem to have it right now, and yes the more D30 users that push on, the faster we can all have the firmware update, that I believe can fix this pretty serious issue.

Canon will say that the AI Focus is ok for a no-pro camera. However for the dramatic color-shift they must do a fix. And this issue is getting a much bigger issue than the focus issue. Some, maybe a lot of people, can live with the focus issue, but everybody suffers from the color issue.

May be that why Chuck not responding

I am sorry, but I get very Impatient on this issue. And some times can lose temper (Rob Galbraith forum). How about to ask opinion from big dogs, like Phil. I did wrote to Steve Digicams and Lonestar's John. Steve said that he never had any problems with colors. John is right in the middle of his review and already mentioned some color issues, that can be corrected in PS, but I did ask him to look more close on the teal/purple colors. So if anybody, who talk before with Phil, will ask him to check this out. May be we get his professional opinion on color shifts of the Canon D30.

The numbers could never warrant Canon making a fuss about it.

RE: Look at the Nikon D1, I very prestigious camera. Used by many professions around the world. The camera has a well know issue with magenta flesh tones and banding at high ISO's. Yet, the camera is out 2 years, and Nikon has done nothing. The banding? If you bring your camera in for service, they'll fix it, but they'll tell you they didn't do anything. Just ask any D1 owner who's had their camera serviced.

You are obviously not using you camera for any serious work. I was shooting kids in costumes the other day. Getting home doing the pictures I had no reference point, - how did the colors actually look. That leaves me with one option, bring my 1v and take reference shots, - come on, then we are back to before digital.

You seem to be one of these guys who think we should accept anything. I will go for perfection, however I will not demand it for new technology, but I will not accept random colors, - and Canon can fix this now that they are aware of this issue.
Why do you think they should not ??? (you don’t need to answer)

Thats why I need as many as possible pictures with color shifts. Then I will come up with universal filter setting in PS or some kind of MACRO to post capture editing. Simply run through and you don't have to guess what colors should be. That the FIX. Thats why I ask All of you to post as many as possible pictures with color shifts. So far we know about purple and teal color shift. What is next? Come on people it is for us, not for Canon.
I promiss that I will post that MACRO for public use.

I haven't been though all the postings but. First off were the cameras in the auto color balance or set to daylight? Auto color balance can be as dumb as auto exposure. I read some values in both shots and the one with the green car seems to have too much yellow in everything. The blue car appears to have too much magenta. The disporportionate amouts of blues and greens in the images would throw the camera auto color balance off. In one case the camera appears to have thown in too much yellow and the other, too much magenta. In the shot with the car as green there is much more blue sky and that would cause the camera to throw in more yellow. The predominate blue in the Canon image would tell any reasonable auto color balance camera to throw in more magenta. If anything, the Canon with too much magenta made the better choice. Are not green and magenta complimentry colors? The only clue to a neutral color is the white truck on the left of the image. I imagine Canon did a few tests of thier own before releasing the camera. Maybe even a little more scientific than shooting cars in parking lots. If you want to see some wacko colors try shooting some teals and greens and blues in fabric. I've had a green pool table turn the most beautiful bright blue with film.
