I am ready to buy my first digital camera. I have been using a Canon Rebel XS for some time but am now ready for a digital camera although I have never used one. I do want a Canon, and I had narrowed my choices down to the S400, the S50, and the G3, and then I decided that I really didn't want one as small as the Elph. Now I am trying to decide between the S50 and the G3. My main uses for it will be for family, especially grandchildren, and dog pictures and vacation pictures in the mountains in Silverton, CO. I have a Macintosh computer with no USB port, but I think I have that problem solved by adding one and then using a card reader, I think it was called. As I am completely new at this, I would appreciate ANY suggestions that you may have. This will be my ONE digital camera, so I want to choose well the first time! Thank you for any help that you can give me. --

Comparisons between the S50 and G3 have gone on for the past few months ad nauseum. Use the "Search" feature and you'll get more info. than you could want. I have both and love each for their unique features.

My first reaction would be to suggest a G3 (I have one...love it), as you has a Rebel before, and I assume were comfortable with it? I would suggest searching this forum first, as the topic shows up almost daily. They are both excellent choices and thing will boil down to a size preference or an accessory adaptable choice....the S50 being the smaller camera.

The S50 is a nice camera but I would without a doubt go for the Canon G3. Its one of the best digital cameras made and highly rated. It can certainly be your first and last DC purchase. But if you havent done so already, go to a store and handle them both. You can read all the specifications, all the reviews, and asik for opinions but holding one in your hands for five minutes can change your mind. Have fun shopping.

since you're gonna take a lot of people pictures, i'd recommend getting the G3 and get an external flash later on... for people pictures, external flash is worth it...

Thanks again. I have read reviews, gotten help on here, been to the store and looked at both, and my husband likes the G3 best, too, so I have made that decision. Now I am just trying to find the best deal that I can from a reputable store. I found it for $559 at a store in Dallas, Microcenter, but they were out of the camera right now. I was happy with them especially since they had a real Macintosh help center!! In Waco, there is virtually no help with Macintosh! I can order it online from that same store with just $5.99 shipping. I have been looking at prices on the internet, but from information on this forum, have learned that I must be very careful if buying that way. At Microcenter, I was up at the cash register ready to buy it, and their inventory showed that they had one in stock, but it was the one on display, and I never buy display items. So here I am with my mind made up finally about what I want and can't seem to finalize the purchase! I did buy the USB port that my granddaughter's boyfriend, who works for Dell, will install for me, but I also need to buy a card reader, I think it was called, and I don't want to buy it online, as I don't really know what to buy--that's where Microcenter could help me. As you can see, I don't know a lot, but I do think I've made a wise decision on the camera!

Thanks for the advice. Do you happen to know if my flash for my Canon EOS Rebel XS could be used on the G3?

I'm going to take some shots for this I bet... but... I would say.. maybe... wait.

It's always a big thing that you could wait forever waiting for the next thingi which will be bigger and better.

However, a replacement for the G3 is due and there is starting to be some noise that it will be announced in June. That's only a few weeks. I would wait and see. The G3 won't be going back up in price any time soon. If the new cam doesn't appear then you've only waited an extra month. If it does then you can go for that one if you like or get the G3 even cheaper. ;-)

Yes.. I know it might not be available as soon as it's announced. BUt then again.. it may be. ;-)
