I just received my d10, (no immediate focus problems). Got 28-135 IS lens and canon 1.8 50mm. Also got Sigma 17-30 zoom wide....well, I'm hobbist who travels with camera and need to carry all the lenses.....now realize that I'd rather just get a much smaller wide angle prime. The Sigma is HUGE.....
So what to do....sigma was around $500....don't want to spend too much more.....

Any recommendations other that canon 20mm, doesn't seem to be anything in 15-17 range under $1000????? Thanks, Paul

Okay. I won't recommend the 20mm f/2.8 as a good lens to choose of the wide angle prime choices. Even though it's the lens that I choose after much research, I won't give it my thumbs up recommendation. And the fact that it kicks out killer image quality I'll be sure not to mention it as a recommendation. Why? Because there's the Tamron 14mm f/2.8 wide angle lens to recommend but it runs a thousand dollars:-)

Sure wish I could recommend a lens for you besides the 20mm f/2.8:-)

Michael Reichmann has a review of the 15mm used with the ImageAlign software which removes the distortions. What you end up with is a lens that on a 1.6 crop factor camera gives about the same field of view as a 14mm rectilinear on a full frame camera with no fisheye distortion. The only downside is the price of ImageAlign (about $300), but Michael does mention several other cheaper (even free) software solutions at the end of the review.

You can read about it hear.

do you REALLY like the 20mm? Actually, I'm serious. I had the Sigma 15-30 but hated the build quality and SIZE! I love the 20mm size and it IS a prime. Reallly, I'm teetering between the 17-40L and the 20. Any advice would be appreciated.

I sure do. I was quite surprised by the first few images. I only have one image created by my copy to post.

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=1423479

I used the lens to isolate subjects such as this church building from the suburban surroundings. All around the building were residential housing and shadows of wires fell on the front of the building. I airbrushed the shadows of the wires out of the image. No filters were used in the creation of this image.

As to the 17-40mm, @ f/4.0, it's way to slow for my needs. I have the Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 and Tamron's 14mm f/2.8 on the extreme wide end and Canon's 28-70mm f/2.8 on the not so wide end:-) For me, the 20mm f/2.8 filled the blank in quite nicely. I picked it up for doing pano stitching.

From the few scenic images I've captured, when I have time to do some serious shooting again, day job is getting in the way, I'll be using the 20mm f/2.8.

I have to admit, I'm a big fan of all the lenses I pick up:-)

I highly recommend the Canon 20mm 2.8....

What an incredible lens...has never let me down and is my lens of chooice on vacations, architectural shoots, etc...

Great quality even wide open...

Yes. The 20 is a great lens on the 10d, and even not too shabby up close. I took this geranium shot just before sunset, ASA400, f5.6, 1/45sec, handheld.

I think it's focussing ok... :)

Thanks for replies,

Ok, 20mm looks good, but I see where the Tamron 20-40mm gets a rating of 3.7 on photode...size is about same as canon 20 prime... anyone using this lens???

What about a used Canon 20-35/2.8 L? Amazing sharp, should be in your price range, is fast - But no USM, just a very fast AF!

Hi

I just got my 20mm yesterday, and I am so impressed with the contrast and sharpness. in fact I really wanted to purchase the new 17-40mm, however it is too much for me(20mmm is $400 compare to $800 17-40mm). Besides I already invested in 72mm filter in the past, so I don't have to buy expensive 77mm filters. The 20mm AF is fast, and very light in weight

I also have 14mm Sigma HSM, it's also a good lens, however it is too wide for me sometimes and no front thread for cir pol filter, and I rarely need this wide. Therefore the 20mm suits me with my shooting style. I stacked 2 filter(UV+Cir pol) infront without distortion at all on my D30.
Hope this helps

I was disappointed with the edge performance on my 1D. (mostly CA) On my 10D it performed quite well. The Sigma 14mm does very well on 1.6x crop cameras also. I have seen those sellign for around $450 for used ones in good condition.
