How do you guys carry the 180-600? Need advice

Hi guys,

I'm currently carrying the 180-600 with a Peak Design Anchor Mount mounted to the lens which works just great! Trouble is when I need to use it on a tripod, I currently have to switch to another plate to mount it to the tripod.

Is there a good solution out there that combines the ability to add 1 or 2 Peak-straps and has a good stable arca plate for mounting on a tripod?

Peak design has a couple of options, the dual plate v3 and the standard quick plate but they look so small and I'm a bit worried of putting them on a big lens. A longer plate seems more stable, right?

So, I'm looking for either a plate suitable for the 1800-600 with anchor points or someone saying that the peak plates works just fine for my needs :D

Thanks in advance! :-)

I use the OEM lens collar and it has 2 mounting points on it (not the foot). This lets the lens rest vertically against my body. Doesn't interfere with the lens foot, which I sometime hold if I am walking/climbing.

Any large lens I carry like I carry cameras, with a QD sling like the MagPul MS4® Dual QD Sling GEN2 which, as a bonus, will also carry your rifles and shotguns. I find the MS4 quite comfortable.

This implies a replacement foot and/or collar like the RRS LC-A15 or Kirk NC-180-600. Much better than a plate.

QD has a pull out strength of about 500lbs and is proven reliable, quick to attach/detach, and a universal standard so you aren't constrained to a single vendor's products.

Once detached, you just put the arca-compatible replacement foot into your tripod head.

I use replacement Arca-Swiss feet on all of my Z telephotos - normal y RRS. I use a Kirk replacement collar on my 180-600. This has a QD socket which allows the use of quick release strap such as the RRS MagPull.

Having said that I never carry my telephotos using any sort of strap. If the lens is not in the bag then I carry it using a Kirk carrying handle clamped to the Arca-Swiss type foot.

I do not trust a lens that heavy hanging by a strap mounted to the foot. I have had the bolt that holds it in place, strip overtime and nearly dropped the camera and lens. I caught it before it could make contact with the ground.

As a previous reply suggests, I use the eyelets on the side of the lens and attach a strap to those to carry it around. It feels much safer and comfortable to carry it that way.

Hm, yeah I don't know, I feel that using the two eyelets makes it feel really strange carrying it around compared when I use the anchor mount but maybe it just takes time to get used to it. The weight/balance gets weird somehow, cannot explain it but I don't like the feel of it.

Better when it's mounted to the center of the foot, that's why a proper arca plate with eyelets for the peak anchors would be a perfect combination. Need to take a look into that Kirk/RRS solution, looks pretty solid!

I use an OpTech sling strap, anchored to the body, and I keep my hands on the lens as I walk.

I don’t think there is an optimal or super-efficient solution to this. One just figures out something that is “not too bad.”

Be aware that the Kirk replacement collar is $265 and the RRS Magpull sling is $70. When I use that system, I also attach a safety lanyard as 'secondary insurance' in case the QD fitting gets accidentally actuated and the lens becomes detached.

Not cheap but probably the best option.

Personally I hate having a long lens (400TC, 600TC, or 800 f6.3) and body dangling at my side, which is why I use the Kirk carrying handle.

Exact same setup here. I adjust the strap length so when the strap is over my left shoulder, the lens foot hangs right at the palm of my right hand. That way, I can stablilize the whole rig while I'm walking without have to support much weight with my hand.

First: I'm quite different because on tripods I use the same ArcaSwiss body orientation !!
On the Macro head tripod, a 240mm slide, while on the other tripod with a Gimbal Head a 150mm slide. The same on the monopod.

That's the reason all my plates are 90° and parallel to the body.

For walking, I use a QD on the foot for the 186Z and a QD on the body for lighter lenses.

Photography ... It is about how that thing looks when photographed..

Here's my system:
  • Leofoto replacement foot/collar, which features a QD socket (about $100)
  • A Magpul-brand QD fitting, with two Peak Design anchors attached
  • A Peak Design Slide Lite strap
  • And in case of failure of the QD attachment point, a home-brew safety tether, which clips onto the QD swivel with a carabiner and attaches to the PD anchor on the camera.
I wear it cross-body and can pull it up to shoot very easily. Plus it's easy to detach/reconfigure when I change to a smaller lens.

Ended up buying a standard 120mm plate and mounted the peak design anchor mount on it with a nut and bolt through the already existing slot. Feels pretty solid! There's plenty of space to mount it on a tripod without the straps getting in the way.

Thanks for all the input and inspiration! :)

Over my shoulder.

Big tele's with straps is just too much weight, size and cost for swinging around in the field. Also, like what OP said, any sort of mounting gets in the way of a monopod or tripod.

That's a good idea, with the additional security, which I will take over directly. :-)

Especially since the tripod collar attachment on some Z-mount tele-lenses doesn't look very reliable and there have already been cases where the tiny screws have come loose.

My Z 400/4.5 VR S with and without Z TC-1.4x is relatively light, but it's better to be safe than sorry, especially since owners of the Z 70-200/2.8 VR S have already had problems with the tiny screws that secure the tripod collar coming loose.

Even if it doesn't come to that, the double security simply gives you a better feeling.

For me it’s a Hejnar plate for the 180-600, a BlackRapid sling strap with a QD connector (which they only made for a short time) and the BR safety tether.

I’ve been using a similar setup with a D500, Nikon 200-500 and 500 PF for several years.
