This lens has serious AF issue with OM-1, it looks like only contrast AF is working, because focusing is dead slow. At the same time it focuses very quickly with OM-5. Maybe it has something to do with stacked sensor construction and it cannot be fixed using firmware. What other lenses focuses faster on OM-5 than OM-1?

Are you defishing by any chance?

I have no trouble focussing the 8/1.8 in CAF or SAF with my OM1.

Just tested in both
Just tested in both

The 8mm has a very short minimum focus distance, with huge field curvature close to MfD.

My OM1 wouldn't focus my adapted Four Thirds Zuiko 50/2 macro at macro distances until firmware 1.7. The OM5 was always fine. The OM1 would always focus it at longer distances - say 3m.

Could you confirm that body and lens both have the latest firmware and say a bit more about the circumstances where is focusses slowly?

C-AF is fast.. S-AF less so

I had more time with light over weekend. OM-1 focuses faster when light conditions are better, in both SAF and CAF, but still I think OM-5 is faster. Both cameras have been updated with the latest firmware.

No. This is my first experience with fisheye lens. I bought it mostly for interiors as I, somewhat, grew tired of 'enlargement' at edges UWA lenses produce. Fisheye, I believe, keeps proportions at the cost of not having straight lines at edges of a picture. I need to use it more to see whether I like fisheye or rectilinear projection better.

I am using mostly SAF, because of static subjects, but I can confirm that in CAF camera focuses faster.

The OM5 has permissive SAF. It will look for areas of high contrast outside the target box. Lots of people complain that can mean focussing on background. The OM1 has strict SAF that looks only inside the box. If there is little contrast inside the box, typical in low light, the OM1 struggles. That's worse if you use a tiny target.

The OM1 has very permissive CAF, the OM5 is stricter.

Once I got used to it, I prefer the OM1 approach. I find the OM1 is very fast with Pro lenses using CAF when I need it, but I've not shot action with the 8mm. SAF is very precise and accurate when it has a good target. I tend to use it for focus and recompose only, since CAF-Tr on the OM1.1 isn't very reliable.

My shooting and AF styles have changed a lot with modern AF systems. With my A7CR, I shoot almost all the time in CAF-Tr Expandable (permissive) Spot with Subject Recognition. The A7CR has the opposite problem that precise focus on a small target requires more skill.
