New Nikon 16-50 DX f2.8 and 35mm MC DX f1.7

... the 16-50/2.8 will definitely be on my shortlist for Christmas shopping! I see this being a lens that'll live on my Z50ii.

What a cool surprise!!

Yes. Curiously, the MTF charts look identical to the 16-50 original version. I mean identical.
Thom Hogan beat Nikon Rumors to the punch with the scoop:

Maybe a "Z500" is on the way after all!

Priced less than I would have expected.

I may get this 16-50 f/2.8 before getting a Z50II (I have a Z50). Unless there is a Z50II bundle with this lens.

If cameras and lenses can have autofocus then why can't I?

Very interesting, and a very welcome surprise.

With two new DX lenses - well, an f/2.8 zoom with VR and an f/1.7 macro prime - I wonder if we're any closer to something akin to a Z70. I'm sure there's several users tired of the topic already... but I don't think Nikon makes a macro and an f/2.8 zoom for the Zfc or Z30 crowd, and even not the Z50ii crowd. These seem a bit more premium than what I thought Nikon considered 'entry level', but I suppose the counterpoint is that neither of these are "S Line" lenses.

Ehh, who knows, but I might be trying to pick up the 35mm f/1.7 for my mother (Zfc shooter) for the holidays.

Particularly the Nikon 16-50 DX f2.8 VR. May consider buying it when the trinity f/2.8 is done - hopefully a wider zoom than the 12-28mm VR and a lightweight telephoto f/2.8 zoom. Not heavy like Fujifilm 8-16mm f/2.8 and 50-140mm f/2.8.

Still, I do not think it will be sold out - and should be available without needing to preorder.

Nice - good to see some options for good, fast DX lenses. Differentiates Nikon a bit further from Canon's rather dismal RF-S crop lens line-up.

An ultra wide shouldn't be an issue. There's Tamron's 11-20 F2.8 which weighs about the same as Nikon's 16-50. Then Sigma has an even lighter 10-18 F2.8. The only issue is that neither has VR but with an ultra wide maybe they can get away with it? Especially if the next set of DX bodies has IBIS.

But an APS-C telephoto that's not too large is the tough one. Can they have it come in at under 500g? If it has to be a smaller zoom range like 50-120 personally I'd be fine with that

I don't personally need a DX 16-50 2.8 but the 35 1.7MC has blindsided me. I actually have a third party 35 1.7 that hardly gets any use. But for some occasions carry the 24 1.7 and the 50mm 2.8 macro. It's a no brainier to replace the Viltrox with this one. Save weight and carry fewer lenses.

Fascinating development.

I have both FX and DX bodies. FX where quality is more important than portability, DX when the priority is reversed.

As such, I have no use for this lens on my humble Z50 - a 16-80/4 or a 16-140/3.5-4.5 would have been more in line with my DX requirement.

However, I've got to think that this is paving the way to the release of a higher spec DX camera.

What a pleasant surprise. I dont understand Nikons obsession with short focal length macro lenses. A mfd of 16cm is bad. The lens is 72mm long, and the sensor is another 16mm from the mount. Thats a working distance of about 70mm from the front lens. Thats pretty close, and will probably cause problems with shadows, insects will not be comfortable when you move that close.

This is the lens DX F users asked Nikon to release, they never did, a lighter fast normal zoom. I got a Sigma, but it had limitations. Good to see Nikon paying more attention to their userbase, maybe a subproduct of being an underdog and having to catch up and recover market share. The 35 I think could have been faster, to compensate for crop, but a nice addition as well, and the aperture limitation is likely related to it being a macro lens.

I have thought of getting a Zfc as a backup for the Zf or for going light, this compact light zoom makes it much more interesting.

A few years ago I wrote off Nikon DX, concluding (based on lens selection) that I should either switch to Fuji or stay with Nikon but go FX. It seems I misjudged; Nikon is doing better on DX lenses than I expected, plus they don't seem to be trying to block third party lenses.

I still don't like the fact that Nikon doesn't have IBIS on their DX cameras.

They can and hopefully will add it in the future, who is the target audience for a 35 1.7, (52mm 2.5) un-stabilised lens?
