The D500 supported 1/8000 flash sync, why can't the Z cameras do this

Mechanical shutters between the two are basically the same but the D500 featured High Speed sync and today's cameras do not. Why is that? Is it that today's flashes are different?

What do you mean by saying that today's cameras do not support High Speed Sync? Of course they do. All of my Z cameras support High Speed Sync.

I'm sure I must be misunderstanding what you are saying.

Most if not all Nikon DSLRs were about 1/250s for normal sync, and depending on the flash system they were paired with, they could sync up to 1/8000s. Now the Z cameras CAN sync up to 1/8000s but it depends on the camera and more importantly, the flash system used (from what I've experienced/read/been told). So if you're having issues with HSS at 1/8000s you may want to reach out to the flash manufacturer.

I think that many of the issues you read about with flash (including HSS) and the Z cameras is not a problem if you use TTL on the camera's hotshoe.

I feel your pain. I have Elinchrome ranger system that worked well with my Dslr’s but wouldn’t synch hss with my Z6ii and Z8. Elis Vener is always a great source of information usually posts on the studio lighting forum suggests Raven triggers for older flash systems. So yes newer flash systems and triggers that can be updated will not have a problem. Nikon mirrorless cameras and other camera makers alike operate differently and cause problems with older flash units.

My Z7 definitely supports shutter speeds up to maximum with my flash. So what do you mean by "today's cameras do not"? That's totally wrong.

I don't have your cameras, but I doubt that the Nikon Z7 II would be less capable than my old Z7. Perhaps you have too many cameras, and don't spend enough time learning them???

Z cameras do support HSS.

But the Z9/Z8 can exhibit banding at 1/250 and faster on 1st and 3rd party light systems.
I'm not sure if this issue has been solved.

For example, HSS is effectively useless on a godox ad200 pro on the z8/z9.
