There was a thread in the EOS R Talk Forum a few weeks ago discussing the lack of EVF on the R50V. It prompted me to look into the R50V in a bit more detail. I found the form factor quite appealing as it reminded me of the M6 I've been using for some time now - I have to wear progressive eye glasses and can never get on with a viewfinder, optical nor electronic. And, it seems to be about the same size and weight as the M6ii.

The R50V is a video-orientated camera and, whilst it can be used for photos, some reviewers commented that it is not that suitable for photos as it lacks some dials and buttons more sited to a photo-orientated camera.

Sigma and Tamron now offer a range of credible lenses for APSC R cameras and a photo-orientated R (an R50P, or even an R10P) would be quite compelling, at least for me. The grip would probably need to be bigger than on the R50V and that might mean fingers getting squeezed against the lenses.

The r50V uses the same LP-E17 battery as the M6 II (and the R8 for that matter) so the only fundamental reasons for adding a larger grip would be for use with large full-frame lenses or to accommodate an LP-E6 series battery. Both options would spoil it as an EOS M successor, through Smallrig already offer a discreet, discrete grip extension / Arca/Swiss tripod plate for it.

I wouldn't worry about the lack of buttons on the R50V as my favourite M cameras is the M100. I don't want an APS-C camera that is big enough to have a lot of usable buttons and dials as I have got used to the screen based controls if the classic M series cameras over the last dozen years. The R50V is a 24 megapixel camera and (like its sister R50 and R100 cameras) doesn't have the automatic sensor cleaning that simplifies life with an EFCS camera. Sadly, if you want that self cleaning 32 megapixel APS-C sensor you have to buy the R7, which is bigger and heavier than the full-frame R8.
