I´ve added two simple third party accessories (hand grip and auto lens cap), the Meike MK-320 for Micro Four Thirds, and transformed my Leica D-Lux 8 into a ready-to-use-anytime machine.
Of course, a compact camera with a big-ish Micro 4/3 sensor, an f/1.7-2.8, 24-75mm equivalent lens will involve compromises, but none of those are deal breakers for me. On a recent three-week trip to California, I took more than 1000 pictures, and this was not even a deliberate photographic trip. It was just my husband and I driving all the way from Palm Springs to Sonoma.
I hate using the cellphone for taking stills as the electronic interface to control everything slows me down, and I learned photography using the viewfinder, so using the phone screen is not an option for me. On the other hand I would have never taken so many shots with my DSLR and fast f/2.8 standard zoom, simply because I wouldn´t carry it absolutelly everywhere (and by everywhere I mean, even the odd dinner for breakfast).
Carring it casually doesn´t scream "photographer" and people simply don change their demeanor when they see the tiny "innofensive" D-Lux 8.
And the icing on the cake is the menu system, so brilliantly minimalist that I didn´t even bother customizing the, well, customizable, buttons.
And just to round it off, the D-Lux 8´s leaf shutter and ability to flash synch up to 1/2000s is brilliant, it maikes fill flash use a joy and effortless.
Could it be improved? Sure!!
-The placement of the on/off button is infuriating, as I often hit it when using the rear command dial (set to exposure compensation by default).
-Battery life is mediocre and I am always sure to load a freshly charged one every morning.
-An articulating/folding screen would have been nice.
For me the D-LUX 8 is the embodyment of the statement. "The best camera in the world is the one you have."
