Yosemite (for the 40th time:-)

Very nice shots. I don’t understand the 2nd one however. What us the blackness top right?
That dark are is the cliff to the side of Nevada Falls
Thanks for clarifying. I thought maybe it might be some extreme weather.

Many years ago I was hiking up a trail in Yosemite and an engineer from Korea kinda joined with me until we came to a sign stating the the trail beyond and above was closed for the winter. He was doing business in Silicon Valley and taking a quick side trip to Yosemite. He was in his 20’s while i was in my 60’s. We kept going above the sign hardly with a word. He helped across ice fields sloping into the abyss. After about 2 miles and a spectacular view he said he had to get back to SV and took off leaving me to my own devices. I’m still here to tell the story. I left out that it was late in the day and I couldn’t just coast back down.

Fun to see others view of this amazing park. Enjoy!

yep. Trying to do it even in 2 days will be a marathon. Keep in mind it is about 90+ min from Fresno to the Hwy41 gate, then another hour into the valley. Adding glacier Pt enroute will be +1hr, not counting the short hike from parking to the point.

Wishing you all the best. (once is never enough:)
Ok, this is a preliminary plan, will like to know your thoughts. I can shave maybe 1 hour by not visiting the Ansel Adams gallery, but I've dreamed on doing that, so I don't care.

And this is just drive time. So add 20-30 minutes in each spot it'll take me easily the whole day, so definitely not returning to LA on Saturday.

I might even stop to wait for the sunset at Tunnel View. Don't know, depends on how tired or hungry I am.

Are there not-so-expensive places to grab a bite in the park?

the Glacier Pt road is about 40 min after Hwy41 park entrance and 33 min before you reach the valley (half way). It requires an hour round trip off the main road. Suggest you do it on the way back to Fresno, when half dome get the direct golden late afternoon light.

The Tioga pass road is a long one, 90 min from the valley to Tuolumne Meadows. But the last half hour is epic. You will need to limit your time in the valley to around 1.6 hr, which is difficult but not impossible. 10 min at tunnel view. Skip Bridalveil Falls. 5 min at El Cap view point straight. 30m stop at the Park supermarket area to visit the Ansel Adams Gallery/store. 25m stop to walk to the lower Yosemite falls (parking next to the lodge). And 5 min at the river opposite Bridaleveil falls at the West end (exit) of Y valley.

Yosemite Valley driving time (inside your car) = 30min

Good luck. I could do it in one day, but you aren't as familiar as I am with the routing and all the stops.

Just do your best. You will return someday for a proper visit!

Did you decide to go the 6th instead of the weekend before. If you go Labor Day weekend, you'll need to add an hour or more to each stop. It'll even be hard to park. It'll be bad enough on the 6th, but much better, I would guess, based on news shots from last year.

such a classic capture Dave!
Thanks, Rashid. I must admit, I'm quite pleased and proud of it, so much so that I'm thinking of a very large print for my house. For the print, I might heal away a small, dark shadow toward the lower left. It's "as is" except for DxO's Nik Silver Efex.

Beautiful images!

I grew up in Sac and we used to visit Yosemite regularly. My last visit was during USAF Sat training at Vandenberg AFB… as spectacular as I had remembered it.

Thanks for sharing, looked like perfect weather!

Thanks handiworks, yes, the weather was great, but more clouds would’ve improved the photos. I spent 6 teen years in Fresno, and used to hitch hike up to Yosemite and backpack to my heart’s content.

Then, during my 17 years in Arabia, I would rotate home for 4 weeks about 3x a year, and often drove across the Sierras on Tioga pass road. (Arabia left me starved for natural beauty!)

Clouds make everything better... well, aside from shooting Hummingbirds this week lol.

I believe it (starved for natural beauty)! Been in the area many times, and never got used to just how harsh the 10-40 window can be. Most of my adventures in that arena were safe hundreds of feet under the waves though :D (USS Tucson / SSN770).

Were you there on assignment (photography)? Photography kept me "safe" during most of my ports of call, would love to go back with the equipment I now have.

OMG Rashid, amazing advice. I only hope we could go together.

So, let me try to get the logic straight. There are two areas outside of the main valley:
  • Glacier Point
  • Tuluomne Meadous
So you suggested I go to the valley sites first:

From Fresno direct to:
  1. Tunnel View (10m)
  2. AA Gallery (30m)
  3. Lower Y falls (25m)
  4. El Cap view (5m)
    Then:
  5. Tuluomne Meadous (90m drive)
    On the way back:
  6. Tenaya Lake (5m)
  7. Olmstead Point (5m)
And finally on my way out:
  8. Glacier Point (40m drive - 10m stay or bit longer to wait for sunset)
  9. Back to Fresno
Like that?

I checked with Google Maps, of course considering is still a Friday afternoon today and traffic should be worse:

I was flying helicopters in UAE for 11 years, then instructing in simulators for another 7. Good people and an excellent country, but blazing hot for 7 months of the calendar.

During winter months I enjoyed shooting city-scapes at night, often with city lights reflecting off water

I bet that was quite the experience. Always wanted to fly Helos. I have a couple friends who fly in Hawaii and my Brother is an Osprey pilot. Had the opportunity to visit Dubai several times but it was before the Burj Khalifa was built, would love to go back someday. And yes... "blazing" is an appropriate description lol. Always enjoyed my time there.

Got it, perfect. Thanks!

I'll be a real marathon but well worth it I'm sure.

One final question: Do you recommend taking food with you or are there places to quickly grab a bite? I can bring maybe a ham & cheese sandwich for breakfast, and a roast beef one for lunch. Water and Coffee is what I'll need, but I don't want to waste too much time sitting in a restaurant.

Rashid--

Since becoming a Lumix shooter, I haven't spent much time on the Sony forums, so I missed this when you first posted it. I'm loving the photos you posted here!

I see you used the 50-400 on a few of the shots, and the results look excellent to me. What do you think about the lens now that you have used it a lot. And is the A7cii still your favorite E-mount camera? (I still have my one and only Sony FF body.)

hey Joe, THANKS, and as for the 50-400, it is one of those great 'compromises'; well built, affordable, good IQ, near macro, and boy-o-boy, the difference between 50 and 100 at the wide end is liberating!

[by the way, I posted another 10 pix from this trip (taken with an old APSC Nikon) on the "Landscape & Travel" forum]

As for the A7Cii, it shares my love w/ the A7Rv. - "different horses"

The smaller camera is surprisingly close to the hi MP one for resolution. Go figure!

I don't mind the extra Rez, but actually it is the haptics and EVF which stand out on the Rv

Understood. I'm fine with 24mp 90% of the time, and tend to use the camera/lens combination that I like shooting with more often than the one which may be best from a technical only standpoint.

I'm surprised the 50-400 even exists! Good to hear you are enjoying it.
