A service company installed a motherboard to my friend's computer when they upgraded the machine to Windows 11. Everything works except that there is no sound. I plugged in a pair of speaker, or a headphone and it doesn't show up sound setting.

In Device Manager, there is no High Definition Audio Device under Sound, video and game controllers. NVIDIA HD Audio is there.

I have gone into BIOS to make sure HD Audio is enabled.

Can someone help please.

In windows 11, 24H2, when I go to:
  • (winkey +x) > Settings
  • then select "System" in the left pane
  • then select "Sound" in the right pane
In the "Output" section at the top, I see:
  • Speakers (Realtek (R) Audio)
    • This one is the audio jack on the back of the PC.
  • LG HDR 4K (2-HD Audio driver for display audio)
    • This one is via my HDMI cable to my LG 4K monitor.
Do you see similar "Output" audio devices in settings?

Also, if you scroll down in the right pane to "Advanced" section and click on "More sound settings", the "Sound" window should pop up.
  • Click the "Playback" tab and the sound devices should be listed.
  • Verify that "Speakers" is selected as the default.
Let us know what happens.

Sounds like the audio driver for the motherboard's audio was not installed correctly. (no pun intended).

PS: When I recently built my PC using a MSI motherboard, MSI has a "MSI Center" app. It installed "ALL" of the drivers that the motherboard needed. Many of them I had no clue of their existence. So if I had installed the drivers manually myself, I would have missed installing/updating several drivers. ..... Maybe check if the motherboard for the PC you're working on has a similar driver installer. Makes a tedious job into a one click job with superior results.

Especially when working on a friend's PC where you don't have the time or inclination to do extensive research on which drivers to install. And it's the motherboard's drivers instead of Win11 drivers.

I looked into the RealTek and it seems the latest version is for Windows 10. If I install it, would that put RealTek HD in the device manager?

Need to install the audio driver that that particular motherboard requires.

As others have suggested, maybe have your friend take the PC back to the service company and have them fix it.

I agree with the others, the computer should go back to the company that did the upgrades, they'll sort it out quickly.

Cheers,
Doug

When this happens to me I shut off the computer, run around in circles, then turn the computer back on.
I find that jumping up and down works better for me.

it might be a win11 thing. often new versions require new updates from 3rd party vendors perhaps your friends sound system. Too often the company says "discontinued" just buy a new one

or maybe the installers screwed up the audio electronics. you could try plugging in a cheap headphone or something to make sure it plays regular audio out the audio jack

it would be helpful to post your friends sound system specs
