After a recent trip to Wales where I aired my A7RIII after over a year I am again feeling GAS creeping in and I am thinking of downsizing. OM-1 II would most likely be the body for live ND and other computational goodies, paired by default with 12-40/2.8II or 12-100/4 but I would need a decent portrait prime as well. I am thinking of Oly 45/1.2. If there another option worth a look?

The 75mm F/1.8 would give you a bit more working distance and it is a very good performer. It is smaller , lighter and cheaper

+1 for Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN, if you are thinking about downsizing

45/1.2 an excellent choice if you go that way. PL 42/5/1.2 the closest alternative. 75/1.8 is more of a specialty lens but also good, especially outdoors. Minimum focus distance could be better.

Never used the 35-100/2.8 but it might be an option; the rather larger 40-150/2.8 works well if you don't mind the size. Guessing the 24-50/1.7 is suitable too, never tried one.

My dark horse is the adapted 4/3 35-100/2.0. Massive, slow focusing, simply lovely image characteristics.

Lots of choices!

Cheers,

Rick

Lovely lens, but too long. A 105mm FF is the longest I'd consider for portraits.

I'll consider it as it seems I can't go wrong for the money, thanks!

Thanks!

PL 42.5 is a good shout, price and size is similar to Oly, so I'd probably stay loyal to the brand.

The 10.5mm and 17.5mm CVs are at the very top of the consequent purchases list, but I want eye AF for portraits as my kids never stay still.

OM1 face and eye pair well with the 45/1.2. Most of my results are bang on, even @ f:1.2. OM1ii has expanded face and eye focus into human subject detection, which is a bit different in use. The combo focuses lightning-quick and helpfully weather-sealed.

Lens transition to OOF is very smooth and the bokeh is quite nice as well.

Cheers,

Rick

The 45/1.2 is a no-brainer if you're looking for a prime, and my lens of choice if I want portraits with shallow DoF.

That said, I've used the 40-150/2.8 for a ton of portrait work as well and it's a champ. It's really a "must have" lens IMO, and 90% of the reason I still use MFT - so you might kill a few birds with that stone.

Hi, if money no object and you're into zooms, I invite you to consider either the PL10-25mm f1.7 or the PL25-50mm f1.7

I have the former, and love it. It can be a bit wide at times, but is wonderful for the small amount of portrait I do.

While your lenses will be smaller, just so you know the 7R3 and the OM-1 might as well be the same size body.

There are three excellent choices when it comes to Olympus lenses for portraits. The 45 f1.2 would be my first choice followed by the 17 f1.2 and for those outdoor shots I like the 75 f1.8

I depends on what you are looking for. If you want the Glamour/beauty look, think long lenses. the Oly 40-150 f2.8 at the long end is about as good as it gets.

The creamy look of the Leica 42.5 f1.2 wide open is also in a class alone.

For a balance between the traditional short tele portrait lens and the magazine glamour look of the zoom at 150mm, the 75mm f1.8 is also great, and usually my first choice for individual people.

Unless you are shooting indoors, there is simply no such rule. the whole 85 to 105mm lens (on 35mm) as a portrait lens come from a time when most "portraits" were taken in studios and it was long enough to slightly flatten features and short enough to use inside a studio.

The greater subject to camera distance, the more flattering the perspective. If you have the working distance, longer is better.

my 3 own choices for identical purpose are :

Pana/Leica 42.5 f/1.2

Oly 75 f/1.8

Pana 35-100 f/2.8
