Hello everyone,
after a long research I have decided to purchase an Epson ET 8550 to begin my journey of amateur printing of my own photos.
However, it would seem that the output of this printer is very dependent on the type of paper and settings (as also stated from Keith Cooper in his written review of the printer).

Would anyone who uses the ET 8550 be able to recommend the papers that they feel have the best yield among the ones tried (and possibly its ICC profile if it is not already available)?

I have ordered a pack of Canson Photosatin Premium RC in A3 size on Amazon, but I am not sure whether to return it and get something else because I have not found any opinions from someone who has used this paper on ET 8550.

Thank you very much in advance to those who can give me some advice.

I'm about to post a somewhat related question. I'm not a printing expert. I have been printing snaps for decades now, but trying to step it up a notch. I currently have the ET-2850 and I'm saving my pennies to update to your printer :)

I've watched a number of Keith's videos too and my main take away is testing is required. That is currently what I'm doing as I wait for my upgrade.

I think testing is the best route. until you are familiar with the icc files, maybe sticking with Epson papers that meet the preinstalled profiles

at least paper isn't too expensive. Except that luster paper Keith seems to like, its a big pack. I've not looked to see if Epson will send samples????

edit: wow, there are so many papers just from epson. I have no idea what most of them are. obviously too many to just randomly test. will be watching this conversation.

I did find you can buy a sampling of epsons "legacy" papers

and signature papers

you'd think they would do that for their other papers

I think it's a mistake to start printing on unknown paper. The best is to start with Epson paper. I print colour images on Epson premium glossy and B&W on Ilford pearl. I would definitely not print on that Canson paper, even if it has high reputation and good quality, unless there is an ICC profile for it.

AFAIK neither of those papers are in the driver list of papers for which the ET-8550 driver installation includes ICC profiles.

That means for as optimal performance as possible you will need to get ICC profiles made!

How much different will Epson Premium Glossy be from Canon Photo Glossy II or HP Photo Plus or a Costco house paper?

As one off prints, I surmise very little.

However, if printed on those papers and seen side by side there could be subtle but obvious (?) variations ???

It’s interesting to me that epson wouldn’t have these profiles for their paper, for their printer.
‘I don’t have the 8550 yet, I’ve got the 2850 and it’s got maybe 6 or 8 profiles. My assumption was the 8550 would have more, is that not the case?

A pure supposition on my part that the linked to grades Legacy & Signature are (primarily?) aimed at and/or intended for pigment ink printers and hence not in the 8550 drivers set of papers?

Of note is that the ET-8550 is recognised by Epson Print Layout and that offers an easy method to select as needed installed custom made profiles.

Canson provides ICC profile for their papers for the ET 8550. I verified it before to buy the paper. I’m gonna test it during next days.
