Obviously, I wonder how good it will be. Would I buy it and then always be looking at the more expensive 50, and wondering if I would be happier ?

I try to avoid buying stuff that I might want to sell later.

But maybe 4 months from now it will be obvious that the new 50 is a great lens for 1600 Euros. Time will tell.

If 50/1.4L is anything like 35/1.4L, it’s awesome. 35/1.4L has quickly become my favorite lens.

I’d order 50/1.4L in a heartbeat if I needed a prime of that focal length.

Unless one has especially demanding or specialist use cases - all 3 RF lenses seem excessively priced - especially the 70-200 where amazing images can be got from the adapted EF version II lens for a mint used copy from dealer for $1000.

Can see the 50 1.4 being a popular wedding lens though - given the big IQ issues with the EF version. Wonder if an 85 f.1/4 next - like the EF version minus the purple fringing?

There is - like the RF 35/1.4 VCM - nothing stated about the use of the BR optics (blue spectrum refractive) to reduce chromatic aberration. The lenses with that BR optics like the EF 35/1.4 II or the RF 85/1.2 are extremely well corrected for chromatic aberration and very sharp, so good for still, astro and anything which requires a very high resolution. There was a good conclusion in a review about the RF 35/1.4 VCM which seems to be also correct for these new VCM lenses: Intend for the video shooter (new wording: 'content creator'), but can also be used by normal - still - photographers.

Sorry but no, that's rather not my piece of cake as I need the best quality for photography and I'm not interested in video at all. The price tag is steep, but would be OK for me if the top image quality would be there (which I doubt a little bit at the moment). I will wait for reviews and hands-on experience.

Canon seems to try to kill two birds with one stone and usually Canon knows very well were the demand is. That's OK, but it might no cover my demand. :-(

In my view no 50mm lens could ever be “worth” €1600.

It probably is something particular, different from one person to another.

Indeed, depending on disposable income (hobbyist) or earned income (professional using it as a tool). But in either scenario, it’s still a lot of money for a 50/1.4. It had better be very good indeed!
