Shooting busy sports with the R62

I've come from the 5dMk4 to the R62 and I mainly shoot running and cycling events.

I know the 5Dmk4 isn't a dedicated sports camera but it did an OK job.

I've just been out and phtootgrpahed a rlocal running event just for fun and practice, a no pressure get used to the camera kind of situation.

One thing I notice is that when I have a group of athletes coming towards me in a bunch and I'm trying to bang off 1 or 2 images of each runner like I used to be able to do with the 5d4 the R6 viewfinder seems to take too long to recycle after one burst of 1 or 2 images the then show the next athlete, theyre past me and I miss getting a shot of them.

I tried mechanical shutter, electronic and electronic 1st curtain, I think that electronic 1st curtain was qicker at recycling and clearing the last image ready to go again.

I appreciate that the DSLR was just a straight optical line of sight from the VF to the mirror to the lens with just the shutter momentarily blocking your view and with mirrorless there is no straight line of sight but it must be something that others shooting these sports have to contend with too?

Any pointers on how to get it to refresh quicker? when I'm photographing events to sell images to the participants only being able to capturing 1 in 3 or less isn't great!

These were bursts of 1-3 images, recorded to a 90V 32gb 300mb/s read write Sony tough SD card.

Thanks

What do you mean by 'recycle'? Do you have image review turned on? Does the EVF show you the image you've just taken? If so, turn it off. My R6II doesn't have this problem. If you're only taking small bursts, you're not talking about waiting to clear the buffer, so it must be something else.

Not sure what you mean by "recycling."

Can you describe what you are doing, and how (AF settings, etc).

Do you have Image Review enabled?

Is the card write speed slowing you down?

Is Subject Acquisition too slow?

AF lock too slow?

Are you using Image Stabilisation? What mode?

Can you post a photo with EXIF intact?

I shoot Tri's and bike races with my R6ii and do occasionally miss an athlete going by, but it's usually because I've stuck on the previous athlete just a bit too long and was slow to physically swing to the next. The camera itself does its job wonderfully.

ps. I'm off to shoot some birdies this morning, so someone else could use your (additional) info to help out. Thx!

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

By recycle I mean press the shutter button to take a photo, the viewfinder goes black, tand then shows the image, then I have to press the Auto focus button again to get the viewfinder to show me the next athlete.

I think in answering this I may have answered my own question........turn off image review in the view finder?

Easy enough to test at home. :-)

Image Review gets turned off immediately upon setup. I can't stand it.

Curious how many, “I hate the EVF! Had to go back to my DSLR!”, posts could have been addressed with this one simple adjustment. 😁

A couple other things as well. I set my EVF for “Smooth” rather than power saving. I find the battery holds up just fine. And I carry a spare.

The R6II also has an OVF simulation option for the EVF display if you want to try that out.

Yes, definitely try turning that off (it's one of the first things I do with any new camera), and report back whether that fixes your problem.

Yeah it would seem that this may be the biggest initial turn off for the DSLR to Mirrorless convertors and easily fixed too.

I have the OVF simulator turned on already, I turned off image preview and although testing it in the house it des seem to be way more responsive for quick action shooting sequences of subsequently aquired targets, thanks
