Hasselblad X2D 100C Earth Explorer LTD Kit

Hi,

Used to see leaked info for new Ericsson products on an Italian website containing all sorts of wording errors. I always figured it was from Swedish to Italian to English.

And the source? An unofficial Dept Of Leaks. Get the soon to be announced products out there early while being able to skirt around the competition crying Foul! Of course, E wasn't alone when it came to soon to be announced products showing up on that website....

And it was the product shots when counted, not the wording.

Maybe there's a similar thing going on here?
You think they're trying to prevent prospective purchasers of earth-toned MF bodies from turning to other suppliers of earth-toned MF bodies until the official announcement?

Hi,

Oh, yeah! That's It! :P

Or, maybe more like letting folks who'd prefer an Earth Toned body mulling over the available Black Ones out there on the market to sit an wait a bit longer.

Stan

Hi,

Except there are other reports of inquires which resulted in We Don't Know What You Are Talking About.

So now I don't believe the original report of an error.

And that also makes me think there is an Official Dept Of Unofficial Leaks at work.

Stan

This cries out for a line of limited edition earth-tone lenses.

Who here is going to purchase this fashionable camera?
IMHO the black X2D looks sexier 😊

I'm sure Hassie lovers will lap it up even for an additional premium.

There is no significant collectors scene for Hasselblad. Most users are professional photographers who need to make money with their cameras. Maybe, they can sell them in China through DJI's distibution network which has a number of DJI-Hasselblad stores.

There have been a number of ‘special edition’ offerings from Hasselblad over the past few years.

FWIW there are several DJI|Hasselblad stores in the UK and Europe.

Special edition with the lens, so around $15k x 1000. Will they sell them all at once for a discounted $10 M?
Where did you get the $15K price? I was quoted $13K. The standard edition costs about $12K (X2D + XCD55v).
I mean, seriously, even with the crazy collectors out there, it will take a long time to sell 1000 of those.
... but w/o dual hub and 2nd battery

some lenses - some bodies

Love the look of it but I would never pay more just for a color difference on a camera.

Reading and watching images on Facebook groups, you could tell most users are amateur beginners enjoying their pro cameras, which would be no bad…

I guess in real life is just what you’ve said though.

Hi,

I recall paying extra for my black Nikon FA way back when. Standard price got you the silver one.

I don't recall ever buying an alternate color of any other camera. And the Nikon Df came in both silver and black for the same price. I opted for silver to match my still working Nikon FE (and not my long dead Nikon FA).

I think I can tell the film camera from the digital one of the same color. ;)

‘The company says the camera's color was inspired by "the resilient ecosystem of the Nordic tundra," but it's not the only thing that'll differentiate the limited edition version from the regular X2D. The camera will also have a different startup screen that displays an icon of mountains, and the four-digit serial number will be engraved on the side of the body. Hasselblad says it'll only be selling 1,000 units worldwide.’

$2K premium.

‘Inspired by the resilient ecosystem of the Nordic tundra, where life thrives in harsh conditions, the Tundra Brown colour embodies the spirit of perseverance that Hasselblad aims to convey with the Earth Explorer Limited Edition. The colour melds the grey-green of the arctic vegetation with the deep brown of the soil, reinforcing the minimalist elegance of the camera's metal body.’

Questions:

Will/would you buy it, given the premium?

What do you think of the fact that Hasselblad is deploying some of its limited resources to the development of collector’s editions?

Its marginal effort for them to develop (if you can even call it a development) and make these collector's editions if it only involves some extra characters to be engraved, a different paint, and some UI screens to be moved around. Almost all of the 2K premium is profit, so I think it's pretty smart.

That's a luxury only a luxury brand can enjoy 🙂.

Might consider it if:

Hasselblad added a USB tundra colored remote or black

Gave the AF point ability to be much smaller than the large square it currently is

Added the ability to move around the 100% viewed image preview via the control wheels not the touch screen (on image playback)

Fixed the issue where peaking from previous image stays on the screen

Added a joystick.

I wish it were only a $1K premium, as I was initially informed, but I like it. I also think the lens should have been a special edition as well.

I do not think special editions take resources from critical lenses and firmware development.

I want a second X2D body, so why not the special edition?

I love Leica's special editions and have several (Q2 and CL). Ideally, Hasselblad would produce unlimited "special" editions similar to Leica's Reporter camera versions.

All those features belong in a standard edition, not a special one.

$2,000 is better spent toward a lens or vacation. And the black X2D looks so good already. Maybe if the lens had been colored to match, and it all came in a matching Pelican case.

I think there is some logic to that *if* you are considering a second X2D body this could be an interesting choice. It’s about 1800EU surcharge over here in Europe though.

Given that HB choose 1000 SE Units hedging your bets might be a good option. Maybe the price will come down a bit over time - I doubt they will fly off the shelves at this premium.

I don’t understand earth toned lenses, I thought that Hasselblad was proud of their color science. They should go with the trend like all the other companies do but have earth toned luts to match the camera exterior.
