Not entirely "illogical". There are those that use 25MP HR mode because they appreciate lower noise, greater DR and lower file sizes more than increased resolution.I was clearly referring to the maximum resolution available for each in high resolution mode, because it is illogical to use anything less if your aim is for high resolution.Ah finally the answer. Thanks. You are missing the point. This has nothing to do MPs. This has to with the different way the camera processes Tripod HR as against HHHR. The way Tripod HR is processed makes it unsuitable for astrophotography unless a star tracker is used, regardless of MPs. The way HHHR is processed happens to make it somewhat usable without a star tracker despite the lower MPs. This was by chance, not by design. You will find nothing in the official manual about this. You seem to be making a mistake now. Tripod HR allows you to choose 25, 50, or 80 megapixels…You keep making the same mistake, and I corrected it in passing but you're still missing it:Ok. But I guess I’m trying to understand why using a handheld 50 megapixel setting is different than the tripod 50 megapixel setting. Is there a reason to prefer the handheld one as opposed to the tripod if you’re both going to be using 50 megapixelsI'm saying that people use this 50mp handheld setting (even on a tripod) to get around noise in dark conditions, or as a special effect in other conditions, rather than the 80mp tripod setting. BTW, I've heard the 80mp tripod setting turns off IBIS automatically. So with the camera on a tripod, it's better (less noise?) to use the hand held setting at 50mp than the tripod setting at 50mp ?That's actually a "hack" or trick that people have discovered, based on the different ways the photos are processed in handheld or tripod mode. In handheld mode, it does less resolution, but gets rid of a great deal of noise (and camera shake if any), so people use it for astrophotography without having to post-process multiple photos.Right but you said "...and the camera stood on the tripod"Hand held mode in camera! There is also tripod mode for 80 Mb files but this are 50 Mb files. So these are not hand held right?
So are you saying that you used the hand held mode but you didn't actually hand old the camera, rather, you had it on a tripod??
Tripod HR setting is 80 megapixels. Handheld HR setting is 50 megapixels.

oh and my last post was to correct the incorrect statement by “Bast Hotep” …
”Tripod HR setting is 80 megapixels. Handheld HR setting is 50 megapixels”
