Would You Buy New F-Mount Lenses For the Right Price?

LTWPWN,

Yes, if the price were right. Like you, I'd like some of the higher-end telephoto primes, or possibly a 70-200. I have a 70-200, but it needs to be replaced, at this point, and since I still shoot with my D500 and D850 quite a bit, an F-mount 70-200 wouldn't be out of the question.

If I could do so, I'd DEFINITELY get a 120-300, though! A 400 f2.8 would also be nice to have! Again, since I still shoot with my DSLRs, having such a lens that can perform on all three bodies and both systems would be nice!

NikonRumors also published the supposed list of discounted lenses and prices.

https://nikonrumors.com/2024/07/25/...-be-discounted-next-week-up-to-4800-off.aspx/

Lens - Price - Rebate - Final

AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC FL ED VR $12,397 $4,400 $7,997

AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR $11,197 $3,300 $7,897

AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR $10,297 $3,000 $7,297

AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR $12,297 $3,600 $8,697

AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR $16,297 $4,800 $11,497

AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED $1,997 $600 $1,397

AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G $1,597 $440 $1,157

AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G $1,597 $440 $1,157

So discounts supposedly amount to 25-30%, which is big.
They are still expensive as hell. You can get them used for much cheaper or get the much better Z-equivalent for a bit more (if they exist).
Kamil,

For most of those first five or so, I seriously doubt that a used one could be had for "much cheaper". Also, a used one won't have any warranty, and you won't have any idea what its life was like before buying it, unlike new from Nikon.

As to buying a Z equivalent, they simply don't exist. Not at this point, anyway. The 400 f2.8 and 600 f4 do exist, but they're both SUPER expensive, partly because they have a built-in TC with them. Their prices are about DOUBLE what you could buy these for! For THAT kind of money, I'd go with an F-mount for now and be QUITE happy, I think! Having the built-in TC would be nice, but not at TWICE the cost!

It would have to be a very very right prices, perhaps a 50% discount over the nearest Z mount equivalent.

In theory if 100% accurate there should be an announcement from Nikon by the time you read this.

If not today - this month? - or by end of August? - and so on.

If no imminent announcement - a problem has been created as few will buy in advance of the rumoured (true or false) possible significant price reductions.

500mm F4 FL E - This one can be had for a modest price used.

400mm F2.8 FL E - A bit heavy for my taste...but F2.8 (insert Homer Simpson drooling)

In my opinion… the AFS 28mm 1.4E and 58mm 1.4G have not yet been obsoleted by anything in the Z lineup.
I think it is risky to buy an F-mount 28mm/f1.4 AF-S at this point, as it can easily be totally surpassed on short order.
Do you mean it would suddenly stop working and you'd have to throw it in the garbage?

I know myself and most others that own Z mount lenses don't really care to go back to F mount lenses or acquire more of them...

However, if what Nikon Rumors is true that F-Mount lenses are to be massively discounted in the near future, are there any F-Mount lenses you would consider purchasing new if the price was right?

Personally I would be interested in acquiring one or two of the higher-end telephoto primes if they were significantly discounted, and perhaps something exotic like the 8-15mm Fisheye zoom, but I don't really have a desire for much else. What about you all?
Yes, but it would depend on how much? I'm not going to invest thousands into F-mount, but if I found a heavily discounted "new" 14-24 2.8G for example for $500, I might go for it. Another might be one of the 70-200 2.8's. If I can find the VR II new on discount for say $1500 or less I might grab that too. But these would have to be new of course, not used, like you said.

They might be more inclined to heavily discount lenses which are more niche too or that are just more than the Z mount version (like the 600mm non-TC versoin) which is about $5k because people are not likely willing to spend that much (or more) on an f-mount version even if it's 1.3 stops faster for example. So my guess is that many of the more expensive lenses or ones that simply have the same/close Z-mount counter parts will be discounted and possibly heavily in the coming years as Nikon probably wants to just retire those lines completely and take them out of production and keep the production lines open for Z and possibly cinema/RED cameras moving forward.
