AF-C Wide Area/Tracking since the firmware updates

With my X-H2S I almost always shoot with AF-C and Wide Area/Tracking. Its worked pretty well in the two years I've had the camera (despite the recent Subject Detection problems).

But since the most recent firmware updates something seems to have changed.

It used to be that I would place the focus square on an object and it would just stay there - even if I moved the camera or the object moved - it would track the object. This is exactly what I would expect.

But since the recent firmware updates I find that the focus square frequently moves on its own.

This is especially true if I point the camera at something with vertical or horizontal lines - the focus square moves upwards with vertical lines or to the left with horizontal lines.

I've tried different lenses and also tried completely reseting the camera to its initial settings.

It also happens with the X100VI.

Am I going crazy or has anyone else noticed anything similar?

On my X100VI I updated to 1.11 a few hours before I had a shoot. I got the eye AF turned on and wide area tracking. This combo works well with my R6MKII and A6700 so I used it for the Fuji too. So far so good as I see the green box focused on the closest eye to the camera. So no complaints here, I’m happy with the AF performance.

I can reproduce such behavior on my X-H2S, but it's hard for me to say whether this is something new that appeared with the last update or if it was already present before, as I've never conducted tests specifically from this particular perspective.

I personally never used wide tracking as part of my workflow for this exact reason, in testing the box would always go astray if the subject was a bit unclear or had vertical or horizontal lines. However, this was an issue I noticed months ago, when I was trying out different settings, so its definitely not a new problem. Single point, zone or subject detection or a blend of them works best for me.

I noticed it was not working correctly in V6. I don't know when they broke it.

Thanks for all the responses - I posted the same question on a different forum and also got the response that this wasn't something new with the latest firmware.

Hey I know it's super awkward to do but any chance you could take a video of your screen to capture an example of what you're experiencing? If so post it here.

I get the same tracking mode behavior with my X-H2S, X-H2, X-T3, and GFX 50S II by focusing on a vertical piece of window trim as well as a varipole. The focus box slides up to the top of the LCD or EVF if the green focus box fits inside the width of the object or if nothing protrudes outside the box in the horizontal direction.
