Yesterday, microsoft announced their new arm based laptops and surface pro. Both have performance levels far above the M3 series from apple. Pricing is really good too. 3300 cdn for a maxed out model 13 inch laptop with better performance than the 14 inch MBP, which in similar configuration would cost 4800 bucks cdn.

Same rules apply to the surface pro too. 1499.00 for 16gb and 512gb of storage, better form factor with kickstand etc, plus running a full OS not a gimped tablet OS like iPadOS. The similar 13 inch iPad pro is 2079 cdn.

Windows is coming on strong in 2024. Great to see some new stuff from someone other than the rotten fruit.

Many of the details remain unclear, though the announced specs sound very good indeed. I've preordered a Surface Laptop 15" 16/512 (same config as my MBA 15) but I won't hesitate to cancel if reviews reveal unexpected flaws in the hardware, since it's not scheduled to arrive until July 2.

I'm waiting until they get into owners hands. But if it's as good as I think I will be ordering 4 devices. 2 laptops and two pros.

It looks pretty sweet. Similar or better performance and battery to the M3 Macs. But there are about 15 different laptops, styles, and form factors available from multiple vendors. I'm looking closely at the Asus Vivobook15 running the Qualcomm chips.

I'm going for Microsoft surface products. I have had the surface in the past and loved it. Every time I goto staples I am drawn to the surface laptop.

I'm sort of the opposite. I want to try something a little different. I used to work at MS, and I contributed to most of the Surface computers. So I have/had them all for years and have high regard for them. Looking at my retired computer shelf, I see 5 older Surface models! My current laptop is the Surface Laptop Studio, which is great but has cr@p battery life when running Lightroom Classic.

The Asus looks nice as it has a few more useful ports and can be had with OLED which is not available on the new Surface Laptops. (but is available on the Pro)

THe new LCD on the laptop is supposed to be killer and just as vibrant. I have watched a few videos and all were impressed with them. The Asus I would run far far away from as their warranty if something goes wrong is non existant. They will screw their customers instead of honoring their warranties.

I have had personal experiences with Asus, so I will never buy or recommend them to anyone (not even my mortal enemy) ha ha.

We'll need to wait and see how well non-native apps run on the Prism emulation layer. Even though Adobe has launched a native Photoshop version, many other software houses have not announced any intention to do the same.

It has been reported that x86 software will run better than intel based software ran on mac using the emulation layer. I would say there will be no issues at all.

I will second that, stay away from ASUS.

I had a very slow DSL internet connection for years. However, in 2022, fiber internet was being installed in my area, so I decided to update my old Netgear Router with a new ASUS RT-AX86U (ASUS AX5700 gaming router). It worked fine on my slow DSL. When the fiber installer asked what router I had and I said ASUS, he said you will have problems. I asked what brand I should have and he said, anything else.

We hooked up my new internet connection and my wired connection to the modem gave me 940 Mbps up and down load speeds. Through the ASUS router, wired and Wifi, I got 10 Mbps. I updated firmware and nothing changed. I google it and found numerous reports of similar problems with no solution.

I got a new Netgear router and have the expected performance with fiber internet.

That surprises me; I've had several Asus routers over the years and they all performed well for me, except one that died after a nearby lightning strike that also killed my printer's Ethernet. An RT-AX88U is currently sitting in the network closet delivering about 450 Mbps to this laptop in another room.

I had several Asus laptops that worked fine (but were very hard to upgrade) but that was long enough ago that I have no opinion there.

It's also worth noting that the report was made by Ryan Shrout, who is very respected in the community. The report may be sponsored, but that is just a way for the vendor to get a 3rd party outside point of view. You can be sure that MS and Qualcomm had already done these tests and knew exactly what to expect.

I have no doubts that everything in this report is on the up and up and will be replicated in the tests and reviews done when the products ship.

In the benchmark report shared earlier, one of the tests compared running PugetBench on Lightroom Classic (x64) under emulation compared to LrC running Natively on an M3 Mac. The emulated LrC running on the Surface Arm PC scored better by about 1%. We can conclude that the performance penalty of the emulation is minimal and most emulated applications will be very acceptable.

Adobe is (or maybe already has) releasing most of the CC suite in ARM native builds for Windows. The remaining apps like Premere will come out later this year.

When I got the Asus router with DSL, I loved it. My internet speed was below 10Mbps, so I had no problems. I could get Wifi over 200 feet from my house in my field while watching nesting Blue Birds. Unfortunately I had the router for a couple of months before getting fiber, so I was beyond the return window. It simply would not give any output above 10 Mbps. Finally I gave up trying to get it to work and got a Netgear.
