On the Panasonic G9, there is a dedicated button for this and I used it all the time.

I've read about people assigning ec to a button like M-Fn, but when I go to assign a custom function to a button, exposure compensation is not one of the options.

What am I missing??

The ring on the lens or ring equipped adapter can be assigned to exposure compensation, preferably with shutter half press to prevent accidental activation.

How you use this depends on the metering mode. In Av, the rear dial (around the joystick) is already set up for exp comp. In M mode with auto ISO, exp comp is already one of the options on the M-Fn button. You can restrict the options on the M-Fn button if you wish. After pressing it to select exp comp, turn the top front dial to set ISO. So no need to set another button. All the button options are listed in the manual, or on the custom button setting menu, if you want something different. Or assign exp comp to the control ring on the lens. Your choice.

Plus - you can easily set ISO on the rear screen via the Q menu.

They should have menu pages where you see what buttons are available and currently assigned for each function. That would make this simpler.

I don't remember how deeply I searched, but what I wound up doing was moving the normal function of the "Set" button to the up-cursor just above it, and assigned the "Set" button to EC.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I read through this thread while I was packing to head out to Point Pelee on Friday.

I agree the manual is not very clear and there is a lot that could be done to improve both the manual and programming interface.

I learned that the control ring on my 200-800 reverts to a manual focus ring when the shutter button half press is disabled (I use back button focus).

In the end I found I could program the button on the lens to enable exposure compensation when it is held down. That works for me and has been very useful the last couple of days.

Have one more day of birding before returning home. Got some great pics and some really blurry picks, but all in all has been a great weekend so far.

The option on the mf-n button menu is actually flash exposure compensation, which will make no difference when shooting without a flash. So this advice is a bit misleading. Personally I assigned the * button to exposure compensation instead since I rarely if ever use AEL/AFL and quick access to exposure compensation is far more relevant to my shooting.

OK, I have camera in hand, and here's the procedure. It's rather puzzling at first, but it's actually fairly simple and very good. The menus kind of prompt you through the procedure if you catch on.

1. Menu: second camera icon.

2. With the down cursor, select the button you want to reassign (in this case the up arrow).

3. Set

4. Select DIAL FUNC. Press INFO.

5. There will be a check mark for every function that the reassigned button can control. For this task I selected only the +/- button, which is the EC function. Be careful not to select the other +/- button, which is flash exposure compensation.

6. Press INFO, INFO, MENU, and you're done.

You have now assigned exposure compensation to the up cursor, so it will be consistent with some other Canon cameras. But you will probably have to use the front dial to adjust EC, since by default the right and left cursors do not work with this function. That should work OK, I think.

Thanks to all who provided the clues. This one was really nagging me. And by the way, I would be lost without DPR.
