Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a pair of awesome PC speakers. What are some of THE best speakers you have heard lately? My maximum budget is $250.

I like power, but mostly high sound quality as I listen to ALL kinds of music, classical music, Astrud Gilberto, reggae, Bee Gees, Steve Lacy, Mac DeMarco, Rage Against The Machine, you name it. There must be a pair of speakers that produce very high quality and don't cost an arm and a leg so would you be able to tell me what's out there these days? Can I assume that in order to get such performance I will have to buy a floor stand subwoofer combo?

Thanks.

Bose C20 Speakers

I LOVE these speakers. Nice rounded spectrum and excellent bass without a separate bass speaker. I went to several showrooms and tried all makes and models and none of them came close to these.

I will look into these thanks. To which showroom store did you go to?

It's been several years, I think I test drove them at Microcenter.

Bose also has another in the same family that does have a separate bass speaker but I actually didn't like it as much as the C20s. YMMV.

Look at Fluance. They have very nice powered speakers.

A couple additional brands you can look into that I believe are fairly well regarded are Edifier and Kanto.

Take a look at the Eris line from Presonus as well. I personally have the Eris 3.5 and think they’re pretty good for $100. They are, however, basically small bookshelf-format speakers and might not fit on a lot of people’s desk layouts. You’d also need to budget for some speaker wedges or stands to get them pointed at your ears.

If somebody were to give me a check for $500 or under that I could only spend on computer speakers, I would probably go with the iLoud Micro Monitors from IK Multimedia at $350.

I'm still pretty impressed with my old Creative I-Trigue 3300 2.1 speaker system. I recently saw a set for really cheap (used of course), and considered getting a spare, but don't really need a spare.

Klipsh Pro Media

I have these and they beat my Bose system hands down.

Interesting. What does your Klipsh do that your Bose doesn't?
Maybe it's just me, but I hear much cleaner bass and more and better mid range with the Klipsch.

But I do have an audiophile sound card. When I noticed the difference the only thing I did was replace the speakers.

I gave the Bose to my wife for her PC and they're still working, and they're no slouch, I still like them, but I wouldn't give up my Klipsch.,

In this budget don't expect miracles.
For high quality music experience - You will have to increase Your budget a bit.

My advice: skip expenses for DAC, and focus only on active studio monitors.
Audiophile gear is as stupid expensive as Canon gear :D
Try to find local music shop (with music instruments), they probably have section with pro gear. Look for ADAM A7X (this is the one I have), listen them, feel them, try to understand precision what comes from those little gems - and I can promise You, that You will never feel need for speakers upgrade ;)

Long story short: You want best bank price/performance ratio = pro gear (active studio monitors)
This is the way.
"Audiophile" way is wrong, it always ends bad (thousand of dollars lost for selling/rebuying etc)

I'll second the Eris. I've got a small 8" sub on the floor turned down low, which passes through to the Eris (with the wedges). The sub really helps with small speakers.

I had a Bose jewel speaker setup for a few days which a customer had thrown out (they'd moved to Sonos), and compared them to the Eris with sub. The Eris won hands down. The Bose were eBayed.

FWIW, I run my PC sounds through a Dragonfly Red which I've had since it came out about 8 years ago. It really helps with any sound coming from a PC.

I recently bought Fluance Ai61 Powered Speakers (replacing computer speakers that were more than 25 years old). So far as I can tell, I will have no need for a subwoofer with these. These sound pretty good for any music I've listened (as well as shows). They were a little over your price point -- $299.

the sky is the limit here - you could just hook up to a full stereo system.

But if your primary interest is in playing music, I'll put up an alternative route - a Sonos Era 100. That retails at 249, though often available for 200. It's standalone, can play music without the computer, and can be moved about. For the Superbowl I stuck one in the bathroom and the kitchen so people could still hear the game.

We had purchased a number of echos in the past- but the changes Amazon made to personal Music support, and its never ending attempts to sell us stuff rather than perform, lead me looking elsewhere, and this is where I landed.

do you have a link to that audiophile sound card? Thanks.

Instead, I would get an amp with USB DAC. EG. Dayton Audio DTA-PRO 100W.

Then use speakers that I have, or use the rest of my budget on speakers - they're always onsale somewhere.

Why are you asking for speaker recommendations on a photography forum and not an audio forum?

I personally would go for a pair of larger powered monitors and not get those "computer" speakers with the separate subwoofer.

PS: This is just for my PC. My stereo systems had Polk SDA2's, and I have several other stereo speakers to choose from. But the above take up very little desk space for my PC.

Because this is the PC forum and people have speakers connected to their PC 🤷🏻
